MTN HSDPA 7.2Mbps

surely they're covered... operative word being "up to" which means anything from zero to max....
its being used all over business, your perception of what that means to u is your problem imo, although me too not happy about the big diff in the user's meaning and the supplier's meaning.
still, like we've been told, if you get >1000kbps on a 1.8mbps connection, you should consider yourself among the priviledged few... but when u think about it, if your efficiency at the office is only 40-60% your boss will definately not consider himself lucky/happy!
Guess we should remember this is ZA and who's the original bandwith demon behind VC and MTN's inability to provide efficient, consistent speeds up to the 'up to' level... Telkom! Perhaps we are too eager to get the progress, when it will take a while to get there....
IMO I'd rather have the networks be quiet about 3.6 or 7.2, and IF I manage to get faster than 1.8 I'll be quite happy in ignorant bliss thinking, damn I got a good connection....
At least until most people achieve the faster speed consistently.
But, I guess, then they can't charge extra for the 'faster' connection...
Perhaps as an alternative, the networks should keep us informed, about which towers ARE upgraded and able, so we don't go expecting the perceived promised hi speeds, if the towers won't be able to handle it where u are...
I'd rather vote MTN to save the munny used for 7.2mbps towers, and for now rather use it to give a better quality true 1.8mbps connection, with properse uploads, and ping times... whats the use in being able to offer a lot of bum services, instead of a few great ones???

So I guess MTN also forgot (on purpose?) to update its website after the ban on speed advertising.
Err, there isn't a ban. You just have to provide the speeds you advertise. AFAIK the networks don't do that well. Vodacom has removed explicit references to SOME (see above) of the speed advertising >>>> A tacit admission that speeds on their network are not as they should be. <<<<<However, they still use the terms "3.6" and "7.2", so a challenge should be made. They also claim to be faster (unsubstantiated).

I also found it on the vodacom website

'To offer you a wider choice of data solutions for your mobile data communication needs, Vodacom has expanded its mobile data service solutions to include:

* Mobile data services - allowing you to access information quickly from your cellphone, utilising Vodacom's GPRS/EDGE network, with access speeds of up to 256 Kpbs.
* Mobile broadband data services - utilising Vodacom's 3G HSDPA network, offering you mobility, broadband mobile data access to take with you when travelling abroad, and access speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps, depending on the coverage in the area your connect from.
* Wireless broadband data services - utilising the iBurst wireless network, offering you instant, continuous broadband access with speeds of up to 1 Mpbs in South Africa.'

Can you post a link for the picture you posted please? I've never seen it before. Where did you see it?

On vodacom.co.za I saw they did fix the text to read as below except on the page you posted. I've asked them to fix it, thanks.

Mobile broadband data services – utilising Vodacom’s 3G HSDPA network, offering you mobility, broadband mobile data access to take with you when travelling abroad. The 3G HSDPA technology was built to deliver throughput speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps for downloads, but expect to experience speeds between 400 Kbps and 800 Kbps with peaks of approximately 1.2 Mbps – offering you instant Internet access.

But this will have to be ammended for HSDPA 3.6 as well.

The fact is that MTN is still on 1.8Mbps, so they don't actually have to change anything on their web site, while Vodacom IS actually giving us 3.6Mbps speeds - they will have to change the wording on their web site.

Thanks Darknet and Skeptik for pointing that out. :)

JUst dawned on me; Was this logo on the News section (frontpage) of myadsl.co.za? As part of the actual article on HSDPA 7.2? If so, it was a myADSL construct and not a Vodacom one.

Maybe rpm / cara can comment?
WE did the image - I will be very disappointed if a multi-billion Rand company creates a 3 minute photoshop image like this one :D

I notice darknet/skeptik is suddenly very quiet.....;)
Just expected kingrob/ic/vodacom3g to be a bit more humble after being proved wrong instead of baiting & trolling (see above). In my game we buy beers when proved wrong, but then in the used car business things might be different.:D

Shouldn't you be cleaning up more illegal web pages?

I'm fairly used to your trolling, but why are you now attacking kingrob?

This extracts below, from the MTN website, is as illegal as Vodacom's:

"........MTN has launched an HSDPA data card - the F@stLink E620 and E220 Data Card - that supports HSDPA, 3G, EDGE and GPRS. The F@stLink E620 Data Card is also future proof in that it already supports HSDPA for speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps when in HSDPA coverage."
"The F@stLink E220 USB Mini Modem access to MTN’s network of integrated mobile data technologies. This irresistible creation features the eye-catching sleek design and a great speed up to 3.6Mbps."
"Our broadband services include: ..........
HSDPA facilitates data transfers of up to 1.8 megabits per second"

Remember (at least in Skeptik's world), it's only 'illegal' if Vodacom does it....

The one page on vodacom.co.za where they never updated the text should be fixed soon. I've asked them to rewrite the section to include all the technologies.

Actually, thinking about it, the Vodacom statement that you "can get speeds up to 1.8Mb/s" is now pretty much legal in ASA terms as many forumites can show they easily achieve this or even get far more (here).

But a claim of getting 3.6Mb/s or especially 7.2Mb/s (i.e. the max of the technology) would be against the ASA ruling if you can't show that it's reasonably achievable. (which none of the networks can do today. The best seen on the Vodacom network by forumites varies between 2.9Mb/s - 3.1Mb/s)

Please post the quote where I said this Mr. Baiter (say that fast :D)

Those beers must be piling up with all the blunders you are making.

So Vodacom will be removing the words 3.6 and 7.2 from their ads then since you admit these are not achievable??

wowsas i just checked out the Samsung G800, sports 7.2mbps:eek:

cant wait for the network to be able to handle that speed, future is bright:o

Do you know if MTN will be releasing any other 7.2 capable devices like the E272.

theyre pretty mum on info nowadays im afraid. had a good contact here but she got promoted, the good lady so deserved it.

I do check thought that on the price list they do have the E270 and E800, both sporting 7.2 mbps capability.

If you can show that the words 3.6 or 7.2 referenced speed, we'll immediately remove it. The graphic you posted above (as your alter-ego) was not a Vodacom construct.

'HSDPA 3.6' and soon 'HSDPA 7.2' references the product name and is an indication of the equipment requirement to receive the service.

Just like a BMW 325 or BMW 525 does not reference the cars top speed but is a product differentiation.
