Since about Xmas, I've found International bandwidth awfully flaky.
In particular, I frequently cannot really use gmail.
Currently I'm at a hotel near the airport, 4 bars on EDGE. Last night
I couldn't see anything overseas -- gmail, news.google.com, slashdot, etc...
It would all take for ever and then give up without loading.
*But*, I could ssh to an account on a machine in Vancouver.
I could also *almost* read slashdot if I went through a proxy that
is in my office (which is sitting on the TENET network @ U of
Zululand), but it was horribly slow. But still couldn't get gmail up.
I'm wondering if there aren't issues with transparent HTTP proxies
at MTNNS or on the GPRS side.
I gave up last night -- now things seem to be fine, although it
should be pretty quiet because it's the middle of the night.
However, I find this on-and-off flakiness is driving me nuts. I
really don't have any better connectivity options than GPRS
in the place where I live & I just cannot work at home about
half the time as a result.
