MTN launches mobile GPS

MTN sent me an sms to download with the exact link mentioned by Jrad. It will pick up your number, and generate a password for you. All above-board don't worry!

My concern is that the articles advertising this have said that NO EXTRA data charges would be incurred. Yet, when you run the programme, it switches from the BIS connection to the normal MTN connection, ie. you are being charged for data! I've queried the MTN Blackberry helpdesk, but as yet, they have no answer for me...

Anyone know the answer??
 
Subscription EXPIRED?

Hey, has anyone had a solution to the GARMAP programme's usage of BIS?

I've been in contact with MTN's Blackberry Division, and as far as they can tell me, the programme SHOULD use the BIS AP, and NOT the MTN AP. Yet, it still has the ability to choose the MTN AP, despite my having disabled it!

No solution as yet??!!

ALSO, the final straw today: I launched the programme, only for it to tell me that my SUBSCRIPTION has EXPIRED! SUBSCRIPTION?? I thought this programme was provided for FREE? Now we are expected to pay a subscription??

I've also queried MTN about this... no decent answer yet, just more questions...

It seems this was such a good idea, such a great programme... and yet is such a disaster.

Only when everyone on the road got GPS's active 100% of the time though...so while the concept will work, the data will be inaccurate as i know of very few people driving with their GPS to work on the highway [especially if you know the route].

I'll probably hope the electronic toll system they want to put between Pta-Jozi to give me this info though....in fact..isn't there car-counting devices on the highways? Surely we should have access to stuff like that ? This would be more accurate data to upload/update into your GPS i'd think [i.e. simply having a road-flow-density factor based on cars passing a sensor per minute/hour combined with the speed they are passing it].

AFAIK, all Vodacom BB's with built-in GPS have this as a standard feature, free as part of the BB bundle.

I use my BB's voice routing quite often. One cool feature is the 'walk' option. When you input a new destination, it asks if you want to walk or drive. If it's close enough and you select walk, it'll route you via alleys to get get to the destination over the shortest distance. Tried it in Prague a while ago and it really worked well.

I have that on my Nokia E66. On MTN. What's the big deal? Cant see what they're making a fuss about. Or what's new about it. Just Ad-mongering if you ask me
 
Hi guys, I'm sorry to resurrect this thread. I've been away for almost 9 months. I'm now on an MTN contract with a BlackBerry Bold 9700. When following the instruction to install the navigation software, after clicking the link, I get an error. "Download failed." If I click details, it gives me "907 Invalid COD invalid code lengths set".

Does anyone have an idea why, or how to get the navigation in SA on MTN going.

Resurrecting again to update those interested. Make sure you use Wi-Fi to download and activate. Donwload does not fail. Some reason it fails on BIS. Best
