MTN launches MXit competitor

My crystal balls tell me that MTN's NokNok is going to be a FlopFlop - unless the promotion is extended indefinitely and network interoperability is provided.

What do you think MXit is trying to be...nice...?

Like any other player, customer lock-in is key - and if the service is perceived to be free by the greater gullible user base - great for them.

Just do not come running once so locked in that you cannot move and start getting charged for "free" services...there is no such thing as a free service.

While I'm venting - the so-called push to talk service from MXit is an absolute joke and contravenes everything that the PoC standard are based on - QoS, interoperability etc...(if it does not look like a duck, smell like a duck or quack like a duck - it's NOT a duck...!!)

Finally - I have tried the MTN service - it works - which is more than I can say for other operators... Do you HONESTLY believe that MTN would EVER suddenly push your rates up and risk losing you as customer...??...come on - no one is that naive...! - think back to data rates....

So lets take a quick score test:

MTN have got the only *commercially launched* international standards based (IMPS for now) IM system in Sub-Saharan Africa.
MTN also have the only OMA PoC based system in Africa

enough said.

I CANT, WITH 13 YEARS IT EXPERIENCE, FIND OUT HOW TO REGISTER ON THIS FLIPPING THING!

I am using the PC client.
Anyone out there able to register with the PC client?
 
Hi, Just checked now again - works 100%.

SMS "pasword" to 31557.

To log in use MSISDN and password - no need to register.

Start chatting...!...

Judging by the responses "competitor" is bit of a strong word to use. This isn't even a David verses Goliath situation. More like the one eyed one legged runt verses Goliath :p

Yes, they announced Meep some time last week, but still no sign of it and it should have worked across networks with noknok. Would've been nice to be able to add some Vodacom contacts.
 
I DL'ed the PC version. It asks for a password - which passw is this? I don't see where to register on site?

Ok, its now possible to add Vodacom users and vice versa!

Only thing is that on a noknok phone client you need to add vodacom users using international format i.e. 2782XXXXXX instead of 082XXXXXX
 
Broken IM competitor

Problem:
1. There are a lot of IM providers out there and each of them have their own client which you have to use.
2. I can't chat to my MXit, Gtalk, yahoo, jabber.com or jabber.co.za friends from noknok.
So what's the point of getting it?

I prefer to use BombusMod IM client with my jabber.co.za account but until IM providers' servers aren't linked to one another like it was intended (Jabber/XMPP protocol specs) I don't see this taking off. Sort of like only being able to phone numbers on the same network with a network locked phone. :(

No thanks. Let me know when I can use my own client to connect to your servers and I can send messages to anyone @ any IM provider.
 
Well you'll be waiting a damn long time... 10+ years down the line and even the PC IM's don't have that right yet.
