MTN limiting Afrihost APN to EDGE?

Hi

Was just wondering whether Mtn is deliberately limiting the Afrihost APN to EDGE speeds in the countryside?

Got full signal, but 2G only, and it close to an MTN tower.
 
Same problem here. I am in Sandton and only getting 2G through the Afrihost APN.
 
I highly doubt that it is deliberate, what happens when you have another MTN cell within the same area - non-afrihost apn ?
They are busy rolling out some upgrades at the moment, and this might be the cause.

I would suggest that you PM Voldemort (as he is now the allocated MTN Rep on the forums)

Could test by just switching to the standard MTN APN and see what happens.-- that is if its a mobile phone.

If they don't have MTN data / airtime on that SIM this could prove to be futile, hence the suggestion for a different device / APN
 
IMHO they are! My afrihost deal expires today and I wanted to blow my remaining 3Gb tonight.

Tried downloading some YouTube videos.
Dear god man it was pathetic!! It reminded me of my old 56k dial up - they just sat & sat at 98% for the last FREAKING HOUR! !

So freaking glad when I wake up tomorrow I'm emty N and afrihost free!


I'm amazed that it chews up my data but downloads fokal?!
Please explain that to me?

You can and it works, but your signal strength goes way down. I had to set my MIFI on 3g only, else it just got stuck on 2g.

As for Afrihost, no it's not them controlling it , it's MTN. I spoken to so many MTN customers (non Afrihost subscribers) and they all have the same problem in my town.

So I guess some places are just luckier than others with their signal.
 
There might be a little less noxious an explanation: Remember Afrihost is accessed on a dedicated APN which has a set bandwidth (not sure if its a single set of capacity nationally or if the APN branching is done at various points) which also determines the amount of money that it costs Afrihost. When there is a lot of people wanting to use their Afrihost data in exactly the same way that IPC acts as a bottleneck the GGSN can be a bottleneck for Afrihost Mobile. It is possible that the network management setup can see things bumping traffic designated for a congested point.

We definitely don't. There would be no reason for doing so. While our data is cheaper, it wouldn't go very far to convince clients to stay with us if their speeds were terrible. I think most logical people would pay more to get decent service.

Whatever the issue is, device settings or coverage in the area, it's definitely not a deliberate ploy or conspiracy on our part :)
 
@Afriman - thanks for the feedback. Was just wondering about the full signal and EDGE speed phenomenon thing.

Anyways...

Afrihost is now my default mobile carrier for data at this stage, it's just more convenient than CellC etc.
