MTN LTE: how good is it?

That's amazing, I wonder what they'll be like when there's 5 million people connected to the network.

70Mbps. R194.50/GB. So is the objective here to try to hammer a threaded screw into the wall? xD

HELP!!! MTN Billing Problem

I recently got the MTN LTE modem on contract, and this month my bill is R450 322 . 52 . Is this possible? Should I sell my house?

I remember reading that this spectrum can only handle few users and has a relativity small coverage area which makes no sense for the South African market

Do I need glasses or is that "4G" I see? Quick, call the ASA!!!

I knew the hypocrites would show their colors sooner or later. Cell C didn't even advertise 4G but MTN does.

It can handle quite a lot of users but uses more frequency to achieve a higher throughput. Operators want it because it covers only a small area. They can cram more towers into an area to support more simultaneous connections but this is bad for end users that are more likely to have coverage issues. LTE is not a good answer for us. When the next 4G technology surfaces we may be talking about what to do with the LTE divident.

Sorry, I'll believe it when I see it.

MTN is a stuff up of note.

In mid August I bought a 3G modem from them because I was going to be on the road and I wanted connectivity.

Apart from paying 149 bucks for 300 meg (8ta give you 3 gig for that), I simply battled to get connected. I travelled hundreds of kms to get to a damn MTN outlet and stood for hours in a queue until someone last week told me that the firmware on the modem was defective and installed alternate firmware.

In South Africa we are cowed into accepting shoddy service that would not be tolerated for an instant in a first world country.

Two comments.. when LTE launches. the price points for R/Mb will certainly change to cater for the larger trhoughput.
@jdkh .. It isnt an MTN branded dongle

MyBroadand’s live MTN LTE
tests in Johannesburg and
Centurion showed typical
download speeds between
5Mbps and 20Mbps, with
upload speeds of between 4Mbps and 10Mbps.

Quick Cellc....Call it 5G....5G's Great service....Great Bills....Good throughput....Giant debit orders....Ginormous reception issues.
hell trademark it...NOW!!!

Theres a thread on the forum where a fellow forumite is currently testing MTN's LTE network (pilot) and IIRC, the fastest d/l speeds he's been able to achieve is around 11Mbps... nothing impressive really and certainly nothing close to 70Mbps... also, he's probably 1 of just a handful currently testing this....

The only thing holding back LTE in the country is therefore spectrum, and here the cellular operators unfortunately have to wait on ICASA and the DoC to make it happen.

This might take a while. :(

If you happened to read up on here about it they have now backtracked on it despite having never even defined 4G or 3G.

Interesting, I saw the 4G definitions about 2+ years back in spec documents, the days WiMax was still in the running... I must have been dreaming.:erm:
