It really doesn't. Eg vodacom launched 3G in my town and turned off edge, so my friend is stuck with gprs or gsm on her phone. Look at the vodacom website vodacom has nwarly no edge coverage in populated areas, so what if you have a 2G phone? They've sold 100 of thousands of Blackberry 8520's and many of these people get no signal and then claim there's something wrong with Blackberry.
PS: MTN 3G has gone down once in the last four years that I've had a 3G phone compared to how many times that the Vodacom network completely crashed? And I'm not talking about Blackberry here (because that's so much worse).
