MTN slashes cell costs

AFAIK if you recharge with more than 1 R10 voucher ever month, then you get the R1.99 peak rate. If you only use one R10 voucher every month, then you pay R2.99 peak. Not bad.

On MTN's website (http://www.mtn.co.za/?pid=6234) they talk about three rates: Peak, Off-Peak and Standard

Peak, I asume is before 20:00, Off-peak is after 20:00, but what is Standard call rates.

Is that an all-day flat rate?

MTNs web site is not at all clear on this?

Even their call centre personel have no idea what is standard time!!!

Edit:
They managed to fiqure out what it is.

Between 5pm and 8pm

I bet that most of this reduction in price will be past on to the prepaid vendors like they did two years ago!

This is quite confusing. If standard time is from 17h00 to 20h00, how is this different from the wow-wow deal they already have? Have they really then slashed prices by 40%? The article shouldn't then quote R1.99 per minute if it is only from 17h00 to 20h00.
EDIT: Just called MTN, the lady didn't know and promised to find out and call me back. After 15 mins she called back is saying the standard rate only applies between 5pm and 9pm. So the fin24 article is still quite misleading/not giving the small print.

bleh, I feel like such a toss for taking the news headline at face value. Its a SA telecoms company, I should know better, and someone please kick the journo in the nuts.

I echo your sentiments broer...

We are such suckers

This is the same trick that Telkom pulled when "slashing" ADSL prices. A 40% cut makes for good headlines, but the bubble bursts when you check out the details.
