MTN Steppa versus Vodafone Smart 4 Mini

I am glad the comparison was done, its pretty clear none of these phones should be bought unless you are seriously hard up for a cheap phone, the low cost is a saving grace, but I think there are better second hand options for the same price tag.

But are there second hand options in volume for the masses?

Personally,I'd rather break my R1K psychological price barrier for a cheap smart phone and get this instead of THAT Vodafone Smart 4 mini WITHOUT WI-FI. Seriously Vodacom, this is nothing but a scam to fleece customers out of their hard earned money by forcing them to mobile data and the dreaded OOB for a smartphone experience.

As I commented in another thread,I'm in the market to buy my son a smartphone and the Smart 4 seemed a good deal until the wi-fi issue, so it means just another month's wait for him so I can put up the difference between it and the Acer from Orange.

Any other suggestions?I've raised the budget now to R1.5K.

Looking at the spec the Acer wins

Where do you buy the MTN steppa? Can't seem to find anyone who actually sells the thing

That MTN Steppa is to be avoided at all costs. What apps will you be able to install, let alone run, on that POS? Get a cheap LG Optimus or HTC somewhere for the same money and keep your sanity.

Modem is outdated. If modem is primary issue (for WiFi hotspot by example), get HSPA+ 21Mbps modem with Huawei Y220 R450.

Bought Huawei Y220 I regret for buying it so useless like a numb thumb. Cant install new apps like FNB bamking app nor latest instagram. It runs on Android 2.3.6 old oS.

The Huawei Y220 does not seem to be upgradable to jellybean & the MTN steppa is also not upgradable so I would avoid these handsets as they would not be able to run many apps (instagram etc.) I also checked on XDA forums and there is little to no support even in updated roms.

The Smart 4 mini & Acer seem much better buys. As pricepoint is the important factor here then the Smart 4 Mini but if you can squeeze out the extra moola then the Acer is a good purchase. I see there is support for it on XDA forums with customizable Roms.

For a R100 man you could get the Huawei Y300 with micro-SD card.

FNB and instagram supported on the mtn steppa 2.3.5os
The play store dosnt block those apps.

What versions are u trying to install.
