MTN tests zero-rating Facebook Messenger

MTN customers in South Africa have reported that Facebook Messenger no longer uses mobile data.

Customers reported that sending or receiving messages did not consume their mobile data, but they were presented with a warning that data charges will still apply when viewing a user’s Facebook profile.

Ah, Facebook Messenger, that app that only people I don't want to give my number to, use to contact me.

If Russia and other countries struggle badly to block Telegram, perhaps that also means that zero rating it is difficult or impossible?

They should at least be glad that a data-hungry messenger like WhatsApp has become ubiquitous and not Telegram, which is incredibly data efficient.
