Yes, that sucks! Big time! I guess I've just been very lucky then...

I would love to get a ADSL line but apparently Telkom are full of all sorts of sh*t if you live in a security complex. I've read that if you apply for ADSL and you live in a security complex, and I do, they just say the service is not available?!?!

Same here. Gave up after fighting for more than a year... :(

I'm also having the issue where I get 0kbp's - is there anyone I can contact who can sort that **** out ?

That's awful! Do you have a router or usb stick?

I have the B683 router and not long after I signed the contract I also, one day out of the blue, had the 0 Kbps problem. It was working perfectly the one moment and the next, nothing... On the Gateway page all was as usual, 1 line signal and network type HSPA+ but no download. After cursing quite heavily, resetting the router, cursing some more, resetting again, unplugging it etc it still didn't do the trick. After this I took a bit of a break, I really didn't want to break my brand new router.

Anyway, I then remembered reading somewhere that, if possible, the router should be set close to a window. Now, I then moved the thing about as far as it's power cable would let me and what do you, all was back to normal. I kid you not. This was more than 3 months ago and it never happened again. It's still not next to a window, just a bit closer to one.

Hi Koloval. With reference to your question about the useability of a 128K "ADSL" line that has been heavily shaped due to the acceptable usage policies most ISP's insist on, back in '99 broadband was unheard of. People were quite content with a 56k analog line, but of course why wouldn't they be? We all knew no better...

Then we were awarded a tender with telom to introduce ISDN into South Africa! Pairing the 2 x 64k channel together was like we would take flight any minute!

But then came the first wave of DSL into south African and through the persistence of some powerful people (Rudi Jansen comes to mind), we have slowly become accustomed to much higher speeds. Now I believe the average per capita bandwidth in south Africa is a little under 3Mbits, which is still very poor in comparison to kenyas 10Mbit average. Let's not memtion Asia averaging around 60 -1000Mbit. We have a long way to go:

1 - Telkom are fossils only interested in their Return To Shareholder and have no interest in growth. Their battle is almost over, and the order of nature will take in.
2 - LLU and Bitstream are vital
3 - Prices need to be re-assessed (hopefully by PWC or another neutral body)
4 - If we are to grow as a country, ICT plays a pivotal role. Under privileged children deserve the right to a computer at their school.

But things are progressing, just not fast enough.

So my apologies, in answer to your question, there is NO ROOM for shaping our internet anymore. I don't care if it's 3G, it's all the same. Manipulation is a powerful tool.

If you decide to move back to DSL I would recommend conating Afrihost.0116127200). They have Unshaped, Uncappped offerings 69% cheaper than any other ISP. And so far I have been extremely happy. I download in the region of 150 - 200Gig a month, and my line NEVER shapes. And u needn't feer of any bottlenecks, as the backbone MTN Business .

Hope that helps!

Same here, i'm getting a good 99% signal with a low ping of 20-30 here in centurion but since last week my connection runs fine for about 2-5 seconds then i get 0 kbps for 10-20 seconds.Total bullsh*t
Also noticed that it runs when on HSPA+ but it keeps switching to WCDMA and that's why we get 0 Kbps, so something is wrong with WCDMA and i get no function or add-on that makes me keep the connection on HSPA+.

You will notice the light on your usb stick goes to color blue and cyan. Now blue is WCDMA and cyan HSPA+.

Open command prompt set up a continuous ping --> ping www.google.co.za -t

This *should* keep the connection on HSPA and not WCDMA. This does use data but its fine since you are on uncapped

Tried it now, but it seems to forcibly go to WCDMA.
I Tried this program too right but, still doesn't work.(HSPA Locker v1.3b by Job 3.14)

I'm also having the same issue in centurion, it's driving me nuts, cannot do anything.
I also have a poynting high gain antennae which is not helping one bit.
Phoned their 1555 support number last night, but that does not help either.

I sometimes wish I could go and punch someone at MTN for this rubbish.

Heard a interesting thing though, that the connection jumps between towers because of congestion. It still Mtn's problem if the towers are busy going.
We pay for service and connection, even though there will be problems but, I don't expect the problem to go on for weeks. So if we get F**kol connection and Sh*t service then what are we paying for.

I tried 6 times today to phone 1555, got cut off 4 times.
Same thing happening all the time, WCDMA to HSUPA to HSDPA+ to WDCMA ad nauseam.
Support cannot help me, except log an issue.
And they'll never get back to me in any case, never followed up before...

This is what I have also experienced with regards to MTN I haven't once had any follow ups. I've given up on phoning 1555 for the day because my blood needs to cool down. Support i really useless I just get transferred all the time.

Phoned again yesterday morning.
No record of me phoning on wednesday, no issue logged...nothing.
Finally got an issue logged again, and got an sms this time.
I hope the bloke misspoke cause he was adamant that I could only follow up after 96 work hours

In the meantime still no internet at home, it still switches from WCDMA to HSPA+ to HSDPA without skipping a beat

Well it seems better for me this morning. No freezing at the moment but, it could be just a fluke.

Guys I live in Pta East, also getting the timeouts and then bursts in throughput for a couple of seconds. Now been going on for more than a week. Very low latency +- 40ms to Johannesburg followed by a bunch of timeouts before getting ping response again. This sucks. 1555 was kind of useless, the guy had me fiddling with my profile APN settings, obviously not resolving the issue.

I'm also in Pta East (Brummeria - work, Murrayfield - home) and I have absolutely no problem in either suburbs. I get the best signal at work but my speeds are the same at work and home. My current speed (throttled) at work:

Your'e lucky then it seems.
I cannot even get speedtest open from home.
and I have to wait 10 working days before I can query the status of my complaint...

So this is last night, 498KB uploaded and 1042 KB downloaded after 16 minutes of trying and more trying to open pages.

I have my modem outside on a special 5m USB extension cable from esquire(yes it has enough power)
see 5M
see 10M

And i have it hooked up to a Poynting LPDA hi gain antenna(11 dBi I think)
And you'll notice the switch between HSDPA/WCDMA/HSPA all the time(and the "full" signal for all of them).
