MTN Wifi calling on iPhone

Why not? Telkom and Vodacom support this
They want their roaming money. Vodacom from what I have read on mybroadband do allow you to use VoWiFi while roaming so you can use your local minutes if phoning a RSA number. Vodacom also have pretty reasonably priced roaming bundles that include data and minutes. Don't know if MTN have something similar that they want people to use instead of VoWiFi.

As of today MTN doesn't support Wifi calling on iOS. It is clearly struggling to master the tech on iOS since it works on Android for long time.

Their own website says it's only available for Android and this image from my iPhone confirms it.

Doesn't work with Cell C or a Afrimobile both of which are MTN network clients. PITA.

It used to work on Cell C before they migrated to the MTN RAN...

Sorry to say it doesn’t work on Android either. The issue isn’t only the operating system, but their equipment and software. Probably deliberate. My neighbour has MTN and Voda and within seconds of activating his Voda Sim and connecting to Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi calling works. With MTN if you get it working once every 10 attempts, it’s a lot. That’s on Android and iOS.
Neighbour has quit their month to month MTN sim and gone with a Vodacom contract. When we have extended outages in our area from time to time, the cell network is down. Only Voda people can communicate.

MTN just suck at what they do.
They’re good at selling phones. Without the phones, they have nothing to offer.

Actually that’s not true, they have well priced month to month data packages. I can’t use them though because their system is down so often.

Hi, does anyone know if Wifi Calling works overseas? The website says no but then again it mentions Wifi Calling is Android only and works fine on our iPhone...
They don't allow it because it would, in their Pea brain opinion, reduce roaming revenues.

MTN may have been a market leader at one point but today they have last centuries thinking and have clearly not been watching the market.

If you can load an eSim in your device, then you just sign up for lots of cheap packages and Gigs of data using companies like BNE who really have an excellent product (non-expiring data).

You don't need to roam on a South African SIM anymore now such options are available.

It does not seem to be working on Vodacom either, could be a iOS bug

MTN does not offer WiFi calling on MVNO's

My bad , it's working on Vodacom , i had it turned off

I just checked and it’s working fine for me on iPhone with MTN. Is your VoLTE working? As those are linked. Might have been disabled on the sim somehow

Depending on what iPhone you have, Cell C does not support it on iPhone 15 yet, and yes, MVNO’s on MTN don’t support it either yet

Rebooted my router and ONT , back working with MTN and MWeb

I'm having difficulty activating VoLTE. I've turned on the switch on my phone, but neither Wi-Fi calling nor VoLTE is functioning. Visited an MTN store, and they mentioned it can only be activated through their call center . Called 135, the representative agreed to assist, but I'm doubtful they took any action. This is for a prepaid connection.

If they activated it you should receive an sms confirming this normally. On iPhone I have noticed that for MTN there is no VoLTE switch present like on some other operators. A simple test is turning off Wifi and while it is showing LTE / 5G making a call to another cell number. If it’s working it stays on LTE and won’t drop to 3G. A restart might also be necessary. I sometimes have to phone customer support multiple times before someone actually activates it. Try FB Messenger, usually more clued up staff on there. If it works your wifi calling should also work. What device are you using?

No sms confirming. iPhone xr. While calls using mtn, the data is off afrihost apn (not air mobile, just the data part)

I am not sure if with the Afrihost APN VoLTE is supported, it’s not when using the new airmobile. Maybe try using normal MTN APN just for testing

Thank you for your advice. I switched the APN to MyMTN from Afrihost. However, both VoLTE and MTN WiFi calling still aren't functioning. Additionally, WiFi calling should have been operational since the signal strength was just one bar.

I've just ported to MTN and WiFi / VoLTE are not working on the sim (I have another AH APN sim that it is working fine on - but i use Android) - messaged them on X - maybe give that a try.

Question for iPhone users

do you notice more battery drain with WiFi calling toggled on ?

I used Twitter to communicate with MTN, and surprisingly, they advised me to reset my network settings. Subsequently, Wi-Fi calling started functioning. Here are the instructions provided to me.

If you are still experiencing the issue please follow the below instructions. To disable Wi-Fi calling and reset network settings on your iPhone, follow these steps:Disable Wi-Fi calling:Tap on "Settings" on your iPhone.Scroll down and tap on "Phone."Look for "Wi-Fi Calling" and tap on it.Toggle off or disable the Wi-Fi Calling option.Reset network settings:Tap on "Settings" on your iPhone.Scroll down and tap on "General."Scroll down and tap on "Reset."Choose "Reset Network Settings."Confirm the action by entering your passcode if prompted, and then tap "Reset Network Settings" again to confirm. After completing these steps, your iPhone will disable Wi-Fi calling and reset its network settings.[14:15] [ MTN South Africa ]To enable Wi-Fi calling after disabling it and resetting network settings on your iPhone, follow these steps:Go to "Settings" on your iPhone.Scroll down and tap on "Phone."Look for "Wi-Fi Calling" and tap on it.Toggle on or enable the Wi-Fi Calling option. After completing these steps, Wi-Fi calling will be enabled on your iPhone
