MTN's Android Steppa has sold over 60,000 units: Naspers

Quite clever from MTN. Looks like they into generating Ad revenue as well.

That's why the first thing when I do when I buy a phone is to root it and get rid of the cr@pware.

Alternative to the Steppa is proposed in this thread : Steppa alternative

But, back to the Steppa - how much bandwidth do those ads consume? :erm: I'm thinking in terms of OOB...

Double win for MTN then. Shove ads in your face AND make you pay for NOT looking at them.
We're cows. We're all cows to these fuckers.

Seriously misleading headline.

I opened the article hoping tofind hard facts and figures comparing the sales of the steppa to other phones sold that are in the same price range but no, this articel should have been headlined "MTN and Naspers team up to pre load steppa with bloadware"

granted I would have still read it, but that is because I am a myBB addict.

Somewhere out there, jes ponders making up random shit and posting it - cause hey, we'll read it anyway :p

This ad partnership is a serious enough reason to stay away from the Steppa.

I've been doing some hunting around iro the Huawei Y200, as I want to see if I can root it & put JB 4.3 on. Intend buying one soon to play around with. If I mess up the phone I don't mind, as it's so cheap (have the Y300 which I'm not changing from the stock).

So far, for the Y200 I've found these 3 links which seem promising from the comments concerning success rates :

Upgrade/Update Huawei Ascend Y200 to 4.3 Jelly Bean.
I'm copy paste this tutorial from forum.xda-developers.com :
http://htckitkatrom.blogspot.com/2013/07/upgradeupdate-huawei-ascend-y200-to-43.html

Can anyone (on this forum) vouch for these working ?
Anyone at the very least rooted a Y200 yet, and if so, do you have other links ?

By the way, that reference to 4.3 JB coming from XDA - I don't find any Custom ROMs for this phone on XDA, including this one shown ; don't know where the guy got it from in fact.

I wish CellC could come up wiht a smart phone for that price.

Definition of irony:

Guy buys the Steppa from MTN, does a pricecheck on cellular call costs and finds that Cell C is literally half the cost, but now he's stuck with MTN !

They walking out of the store like hotcakes. If you shop around, example go to Pep you can pick up the device for R449 + Receive R60 complimentary airtime :) Now with Huawei Ascend Y220 at the same price R449 is making the right decision - 1 store received 100 of them today, sold all of them by afternoon. Everyone walking into the store wanted Huawei Ascend Y220.
