MTN's big bandwidth plans

Its stil funny how vodacom disabled the edge feature on their cellphones some time ago when they couldnt provide edge signals, to ensure their customers wouldn't be tempted to join MTN. They will always find a way to lock clients in.

Can you give more details please? First time I hear about this.

Why would Vodacom 'disable' EDGE when they have a similar or bigger EDGE footprint than MTN? And had for a few years. First time I saw VC / MTN EDGE network size numbers were in 2005 (at the first myBB conference) and then Vodacom definitely had a bigger footprint.

Also, why 'disable' EDGE if the phone would automatically select GPRS/EDGE/3G/HSDPA?

What? That can't be right. I discovered they had EDGE in 2005 long before they even announced it. The phone I had at the time was a Nokia 6230i and I was one of those fortunate people that did not pay for data. So I regularly used my phone to download big files and I clearly remember the day it did 25 kb/s instead of 12kb/s (GPRS+).

I think I actually still have screen shots of that (and MTN speeds at the time). Vodacom was way ahead and still is in terms of their network. They would never do something as stupid as disable EDGE on their phones. I am not even sure if you can do that? If they can then you can just flash the phone at the manufacturers support center. I did with many older Nokia phones to get rid of the annoying "Yebo Gogo" startup and shutdown splash screens.

The black V360 (vodafone) does not support edge until it's flashed with standard v360 fw. Whereas the MTN grey V360 had edge enabled.

Just something I've noticed and thought it might be due to Vodacom not having edge coverage. I agree with you it doesn't make sence to disable a feature on your handsets -.-

Maybe for voice but Vodacom data "3G" they might as well call it GPRS v3.0, because I can be in a "3g" zone and my iburst will out perform Vodacom 3G and as for HSDPA, athough vodacom say they offer this I have yet to experience these speeds ANYWHERE.

Vodacom have too many users IMHO - and for godsake stop selling phones you cannot fix.

Test I did tonight with a) Nokia N-gage, b) I-mate K-jam and c) Nokia N95

First connect to Myadsl.co.za and secondly try to stay connected to mxit and have a semi coherent convo with the spawnlette.

MTN:
With all 3 phones I had to refresh a number of times just to get to MYADSL
Mxit. Refused to connect with the Nokias but connected briefly with the I-mate before it promptly disconnected.

Vodacom
All 3 phones just worked.

Maybe it was just the proximity to telkom towers that influenced the results, I'll try repeating it here at home tomorrow morning.
