MTN's "uncapped" broadband a con?

Why's MTN getting attacked when other ISPs have been doing it for ages?

Because other ISP's have a fair usage limit of at least 10x times the size...not 3gb. Oh, and they don't charge R 799 and lock you into a 24 month contract to add. :)

Other ISPs aren't wireless.

Look at MWEB's Uncapped Wireless 4096 Kbps - R 2795. And it doesn't have much coverage.

BTW - I think its pretty well known that I'm not an MTN fan... but lets compare them to other cellular providers with uncapped access -just to be fair.

I had a 3.2mbps connection with 30GB of usage, which was throttled down to 512kbps after the 30GB was depleted, when I lived in the UK. They called this a capped account. This is no different, other than the "fair usage" amount is a third of my 30GB. This is blatant false advertising.

Oh, btw people, I'm starting a service where you can get uncapped internet for R150 per month. Fair usage policy of 10MB.

International common pratice

'Unlimited' broadband capping/throttling is common practise, at least here in the UK.
ISP are slowly cottoning on that most users prefer a high speed connection rather than a truly uncapped connection. Having a 50GB cap is more than enough for the vast majority of home users and most small businesses and it enables ISP's to provide a better level of service.

It is also doubtable that anybody hitting 250GB a month (at least from home), is doing so through legitimate downloads - even if you download every version ubuntu/kubuntu/xubunt... every month. I would rather have a quality service with a reasonable, customizable cap.

One area where unlimited really is a lot of bull is mobile - over here it could be anything from 500MB to 1Gig

Here we have 2 words which have completely different meanings which seems to be confusing 90% of the users here.

1. Uncapped - Your data won't be cut off.
2. Throttled - Your speed will be severely restricted.

Q) Can you download for the whole month and not exceed your data cap?
A) Yes you can.
Conclusion - Must be a uncapped account then.

Q) Is it fair to throttle the speed?
A) No it isn't.
Conclusion - Big business isn't fair. Who would have thought.

Here we have the whole uncapped/throtteling word mixup happen again.

Q) Can you download for the whole month and not exceed your data cap?
A) yes you can.
Conclusion - Must be a uncapped account then.

Q) Will your speed be throttled after a certain amount of data?
A) Yes it will be.
Conclusion - Your speed is severely restricted.

Q) Will that mean you will hit your data cap?
A) No since there is no data cap.
Conclusion - Must be a uncapped account again.

No ways. Throttling to 128kb/s is basically capping. You can't browse the net at that speed and even mail will be very slow. So to all intents and purposes, you can't use your (very expensive) Internet connection, hence, you're being capped.

Its fine if you download 24/7 on the line. R38 per gig, which is pretty decent for mobile data.

By ADSL standards its ludicrously overpriced though.

Agreed :D

Thats why I said it should be compared with other cellular uncapped offerings, not ADSL.

Dude, I am on close to 200GB and most of it has been from downloading entire websites that I have paid to gain access to.

Fair enough - but why should others be taxed because you need to download full sites? Yours is a special case need - therefore you should pay

Yea compared to Vodacom/Cell-C/Virgin ....this is the best deal out there....uncapped/capped whatever the term, it's still potentially much much cheaper.

If i just think back how often Vodacom and MTN nailed me on OUT OF BUNDLE costs , and knowing you will NEVER GO OUT OF BUNDLE with this offering then you have to consider this as a good deal if you're remotely in the 3GB mobile usage range.

And i mean this is not some obscure price drop like Vodacom [which you can't really notice] . If my ADSL line for some reason gets stolen and Telkom tells me they'll never put one back in, then this is pretty much what i'll go for. You can do alot on 128kbps :)

LOL Mtn,try something else

Can't argue with that!

My point is that capping of some sort is not unreasonable - but the price certianly must reflect that too

Well right now www.mtn.co.za is not even working... Anyway.

Let's do the maths - let's just say that you use 10Gb at full speed - so you're then throttled to 128 kbps. That works out to (assuming you max it out) to 1.4Gb per day which is 42Gb per month. Add the 10Gb at full speed and that's 52Gb per month. WHICH IS NOT AN UNCAPPED ACCOUNT. If I were an ISP and said that I'm selling an uncapped account but limited you to 0.0001kbps, technically I'm not uncapped - fair? Don't think so...

So if I'm only able to do 80GB on my uncapped 384kbps line and you can do 800GB on your uncapped 4mbps line, does that mean one is more uncapped than the other? :p

Hear ye! hear ye! A cheap alternative to MTN uncapped !

Telkom ISDN Line rental : R231.36
M-Web ISDN 128k Access : R275.00

Total : R506.36

Yep! Same speed, cheaper price !
