Actually that statement in and of itself is not true.

I have caught one car thief that had nothing by a flat piece of metal to unlock the cars...

ALOT of car thieves are hoping not to get into a confrontation, so they're unarmed. Its the hijackers you have to worry about, they're looking to get into a confrontation and win.

<do all my posts go through the toxic parser lol>

So how many car thieves have you caught then :D

They need the tools to start the car, remove the radio etc. Fingernails don't always work.

No.... all your posts don't go through a parser, but I will challenge anyone who makes a post stating an opinion that isn't true.

I have caught 1 and scared away 4. Is that enough for you?

Ok, starting a car doesn't necessarily require any tools once you have the car unlocked. and removing the radio or anything else isn't a car thief, but rather just a thief in general and they even more confrontation averse than a normal car thief.

The thief I caught in my car was a gangster who was sitting in the passenger seat, rummaging through the cubbyhole. Don't think he was trying to steal a uno.:D
But for all the butt kicking training you can get. Remember you still have to let your brain override your self preservation instincts at the critical moment (ie. go into attack mode)- and that's not easy to do when you are caught by suprise. Yes I have training but I ignored the most important thing I was taught.- not tactics- but to THINK. I should have taken a deep breath and planned an attack rationally rather than letting my angry emo get the better of me which is difficult to do when some fsk*er is in your car rummaging through your stuff.
Anyway recently in Outshoorn of all places I arrived in the middle of the night and parked across the road from the old holiday Inn and I remembered I forgot something so as I crossed the road I saw another Fsk*er in my car rummaging through in the passenger seat, and this time HE got such a fright, that he fled and ran smack bang right into the nearest tree and saw disco lights for a very long time.

Hose, my grandpa was a farmer, and used to keep his shotgun loaded with coarse salt for those occasions when he caught sight of miscreants pilfering his livestock.

hehe... I remember my Afrikaans teacher used to tell similar stories :D Always thought it was a very crude, but probably very effective means of solving a problem. She told stories of how her brothers would pick apples and oranges and stuff from the farmer's plots and try to get away as fast as possible before being shot :D

Lycan, you're most welcome :) I'm certain that there are quite a few very competent people/institutions in C.T. who offer butt-kicking courses :)

:D Thanks again :p

LOL! I'd've loved to see that :D

The more sophisticated the criminals the less violent. In Europe they won't hijack your car because they can disable any electronic-anti-theft device and drive off with your car, by next day it's heading towards the ex-USSR.

In SA where the thugs are relatively stupid, most have to resort to violence and need the car key before they can take the car, the only way to do that is to terrorise the driver into handing it over.

PeterCH I think you're underestimating the sophistication of the South African car thief quite drastically.

Yes there are the amateurs, but the cartels that take orders and ship cars over the borders, they want the cars as quickly as possible and their guys usually have some very sophisticated kit.

Correct, Toxic. I was present when a 'very respectable' spares dealer was arrested last year. Upon inspection his premises were found to house some really advanced gadgetry, including devices used for unlocking certain vehicles. In addition there were keys galore and assorted implements associated with vehicle theft. It eventually transpired that his crew had made off with over 50 vehicles in the preceding 3 months. In not a single recorded instance was violence involved.

Any car is fair game in Eastern Europe where car hijackings are very rare. They will disable the newest immobilisers and your Maybach will be gone - but no-one will stick a gun to your head. In SA the gangstas are not nearly that sophisticated and rely on armed force to gain the car.

Well, then we don't have a hijacking problem in SA because in Europe hijacking is very rare while car theft is even higher than in SA, in volume that is.

Majority of vehicles stolen in SA are stolen using violence or driver error.
It's the opposite in other parts of the world.

Armed violent crime is rare in Europe. Car thieves gaining cars that way would not last very long.

Not to mention the more high tech methods of policing in that part of the world.

Such a sad attitude to have. Why do you think crime is so rampant and criminals can just do whatever they want? Because people like you just turn a blind eye and think only of themselves.

Imagine the world if everyone had Gdiza's attitude and actually intervened when a crime was being commtted. Isn't that a place you would want to live? I know I would.

yes

by all means, bring a knife or witty mouth to a gun fight. see where that gets you

Fair enough. I am not talking about people being foolish or martyrs.

But if someone is being mugged and passers-by literally just pass by and do nothing at all, I think it is a very sad thing.

I am not saying take on some criminal with a gun if you are unarmed. I am saying, people need to take a stance and not just sit back and do nothing as always.

And how do you propose someone takes said stance? By shouting at the mugger from a distance?

He's got a gun. People get shot for a cellphone or less every single day. Bravado could get you or the person you're trying to 'help' killed. Ever thought about the irony of your 'help' getting the mugged dude wasted instead of justed robbed?

heh... My other half had a mouth on him :) He managed to keep his messenger bag and all its contents (including his wallet) and at the end of the day only lost his cellphone. Then again, my other half takes a while to realise that a crazy person with a gun is arguing with him.

Regardless - look away from crime and you're just as guilty as the criminals. I'm a firm believer in that after this thread.

Been thinking about that a lot since last night. You know, I can't help thinking that something as simple as someone (specifically that guy who saw my fiancé mouth, "help me") just walking up to them, seeing my babe and just pretending to be long lost friends or something daft - ignoring the mugger and say, "Hey, I just remembered! There's something I want to show you!" What would the mugger have done? Shoot them or get confused and walk off? Obviously that wasn't his intention since my babe still has a pulse.

Let me rephrase... I don't expect someone to just pounce the mugger or whatever... But to just walk past? Not even call the police? Not do anything? How do you live with yourself if you see someone is in trouble and do NOTHING?

and you know this how? Have their cellphone records do you? police ignore calls for help all the time, it wouldnt have been a first

Yeah, the guy obviously went straight to the security guards who were about 50m away.

walking past the mugging scene to get to safety and then making a call is hardly ignoring a crime is it? And how do you know this didnt happen?

You want me to take on an armed mugger with my bare hands when(sorry to put it so bluntly) your SO didnt have the guts to try that himself? Interesting

You get one life. ONE. You think I'm about to put that in danger to help you keep your cellphone? Call me selfish if you wish. If the mugger was handing your SO a beatdown I'd be there in a flash, but a gun just changes the whole thing completely

not all "security guards" are actually armed. And anyway, you paint a picture of your SO having a little chat with this guy for about 20 mins. Passersby probably didnt even realise something was up?
