Multichoice HD Decoders

i read somewhere i think it was on the DSTV forum that it could be about R4500 to R5000
which is a bit much i think, but i think thats speculation.

I wonder if the subscription prices will change to view the HD channels.

Fail... but people will pay for it.

It fine then... I'll pick up a cheep PVR1 and upgrade to HD in 3 years when it becomes standard and the price of HD TV's drop

Definitely some poeple will fork that out to buy it but like i said i think its speculation.

Don't think i can wait that long, so bust goes the bank in a couple of months

Ya, i have been living without DSTV for 4 months since I moved out of home. I was waiting for my bond to come through before I signed up with DSTV but that ended up taking a while.
I really enjoyed PVR and I wouldn't get DSTV with out it, if the new decoder is R3000 or so then I think its worth it... I am assuming that they are adding a few other things:
Record on 2 channels, more HDD space, improved performance, heat management etc

Don't forget you'll also need another (probably expensive) lnb.Got a feeling they're not in a hurry anymore since Telkommedia is practically dead.

I dont understand what the extra LNB is for...

There is no more dual view and then you can record on 2 channels ?
So where is the need for an extra feed ?

Apart from the obvious high-definition television, some subscribers may have to upgrade their decoder (LNB). [For the less technical readers, a low-noise block converter (LNB) is used in communications broadcast satellite reception.]

“If subscribers already have a twin LNB, they will need a multiswitch device for splitting the signal into 4. For a new subscriber or a subscriber with a single feed LNB, a new LNB will be required,” said Multichoice.

HERE
...not really a special one as i thought

Dude... did you ever wonder if you were banned due to your nick ???

Nerfherder, should I rather change it to "All Ages"? Nope, it was def not my nick....I registered on there with my real name (LOL - Maybe that was why I was banned).

Essop, is it confirmed that there will be no more dualview?
Any idea on what the HDD Space will be?

many years ago when dstv just launched my parents baught a Pace DVR500 decoder for R4000! Would be interesting to see what this one will be going for.

That's the one we bought back then too. DSTV claimed that their decoder had more processing power than an Apollo rocket and that it was 'future proof'.

HD decoders are a joke. Multi choice will only be broadcasting a few channels in HD. The decoder has one viewable output and will record 2 channels. If you want to have a second TV on HD you need ro run RF cable to it and have a second set top box to decode to HD. Thats all the info I got from my business partner who went to the demo.

All this by the way is a temporary measure to keep FIFA happy. A rush job that is pushed out to the consumer.

Gunny, so even if I am happy with only one HD channel and one SD channel, it will still NOT be dualview?

I looked that that link and it says that the decoder has PIP... if it does then that will be awsome !

If that replaces the dual view then I'm happy.

For me its all about the content.

They cant just flip a magic switch and every broadcast turns into HD video.

At the moment we only have one show that is shot on HD (last time I checked), "are you smarter than a fifth grader", and I am almost sure (although I am guessing) that they dont get any overseas content as HD.

But, on the other hand, most sport are shot on HD (rugby, cricket, soccer) so from that point alone I guess it would be worth the cost, if sport is you thing.

the real question is why would someone at game not want people to buy PVR's? don't the get commision each time the sell something?
