MultiChoice launches DStv DVB over IP

But don't tell Afrihost, their packages "are not suited for things like Youtube" :)

I for one long for the day when it's all pay per view or watch what you want when you want with a huuuge freaking archive of EVERYTHING that's available. Think Youtube but far bigger and no stupid comments.

Monthly subscriptions or pay as you go TV is where it's at. Legal, easy to use, no PVR required, no staying up til xPM to watch something. It's like TPB made easy and legal.

But I a guy can dream.

Be very careful when you make use of a service like this, as some people on this forum will label you as "abusive" for using so much internet... :wtf::D

Have you found anything suited to the current uncapped packages?

Well I've switched to Openweb, no limits, it's just shaped, seems a bit slower during the day, but great speeds so far after hours. I haven't used mine for that long so I can't really say - but there's no silly throttle-limit.

Ja, I've been getting TV over IP for years now! :D

Probably it's going to cost an arm and a leg as we all know their pricing policy...

Or rather: Afrihost Unlimited TV: Watch as much TV as you want from your sofa!

Disclaimer: This service is designed for someone who wants to watch the TV as much as they want from their own sofa but it is not designed for couch potatoes or PVR's that are setup to record TV 24/7.

After the first 30 hours you will be moved into a different category whereby some channels are limited.

After the first 60 hours you will be moved into a different category whereby some channels are limited more aggressively and your TV streaming will be throttled to 15fps scaled down to 640x480

After the first 120 hours you will be moved into a different category whereby some channels are limited more aggressively and your TV streaming will be throttled to 10fps and scaled down to 320x240

After the first 240 hours you will be moved into a different category whereby some channels are limited more aggressively and your TV streaming will be throttled to 1fps and scaled down to an interpolated singular pixel.

Please have a warm day and let us know if we can do anything for you.

I know you were being funny, but there didn't seem much acknowledgement of the fact that this is intended for large, CLOSED deployments, not over the greater interwebs.

i.e. hotels, etc.

It was an idea I had some time ago, set up a central server with a DVB-S/S2 card or multiple, add an Irdeto2 CAM, decode all the channels simultaneously (or as many as a single machine could handle), and simply multi-cast them onto the network.

The receivers could be inexpensive devices much like the NetFlix boxes, without needing anything particularly clever on them, just a channel guide which could be relayed from the receiving server.

Unfortunately, the legalities of it prevented me from digging deeper into it, and now I see Multichoice has done it themselves. I assume that each receiver in the DSTV solution has its own smart card, though, as I can't imagine they will want to stream decrypted content over a network.

Hmmm... I could be wrong, but it is only for Hotels, Complexes, etc.

I think the idea is that you can have one DSTV dish for the whole complex/hotel/block of flats, etc and then distribute it locally via IP (ethernet) instead of the current RF?

Oops, guy above beat me to it :)

why would anyone want to pay for dstv's shoddy, Super ancient, low res, advert filled TV Programs, when one can have BRAND NEW, HD-Quality, Zero-Advert TV-Series, for free?

For me it is not always about the latest series. Sometimes I want to "see what is on". I will miss documentaries, my daughter will miss bbc kiddies channel.

Just when you thought DStv was been threatened by new plays in the market and cheaper Bandwidth packages. Nice move, I won't be subscribing for this service but it is still great technology for a country to have!
