MultiChoice launches new DStv Explora Ultra decoder

MultiChoice has announced the launch of its new Explorer Ultra decoder, which will offer high-quality satellite broadcasting as well as integration with popular streaming services.

This decoder has built-in Wi-Fi for Internet connectivity while offering the same features as the previous-generation Explora decoder.

MultiChoice said this product will offer customers “the best of the satellite world and the best of the streaming world” in a single package.

I saw something about 4K streaming somewhere sneakily put in the promotional video. Can @mybroadband confirm availability of 4K services with Multichoice?

Why doesn't DSTV just include your annual TV licence payment with their subs as well?

Built in WiFi is good, doesn't suggest it's more capable. I won't be surprised if they later announce that older Exploras can also do it. Once they've made their profit on the new hype.

4k capable --- that is all, still depends on the availability of 4k content and transmission.
Just an Explora 3A with a few bells and more complicated sw.
Built-in Wi-Fi integrates the previous dongle - big deal.
Still requires a pretty substantial Internet connection.

Price?

SABC are too possessive about that. And too few pay it, plus they're supposed to be scrapping it.

It will be content via NetFlix, etc . , not the native DSTV stuff.

This is about time ... "Built in WiFi (802.11b/g/n/ac)"
If that’s the case this would be the very definition of “missed opportunity”. I would think they would focus more on native 4K for their own content than to piggyback off OTT/3rd parties

Is it too much to ask for an upgraded "high-end" Explora after 6 years ?

Built-in ac Wifi and 4K for Netflix is nice and all that, but I'd much rather have a R2499 Explora Ultra that brings back the 2Tb HDD and channel number display from the original R2499 Explora, but with 4K support and 4K content on MNET and 2 sport channels at launch.

Nice to see 4K and Atmos but no mention of HDR. The cheaper (I assume) Streama specifically mentions 4K and HDR
Yes...streaming in 4k ... via 3rd parties :)

"The DStv Streama offers 4K streaming capability, which can be accessed in conjunction with a 4K-capable TV set.
Selected third-party applications available on the Streama will offer 4K streaming content, subject to availability and subscription terms."

Do not forget the record-2-view-1 version :)

We might as well start talking about the Hopper again ;- )

(USA unit with many tuners / independent environments etc., already available long ago.)

Any ideas on the price of the Streama? I mean basically that unit is for all the friends and families that share a single premium account right??
