Crime is not going down. The police these days are not issuing case numbers as easily as they would in the past. In fact the DA have uncovered cases of murder where the death certificates have not read murder. There have also been many cases of corruption in the police, where statistics are being manipulated.

Do some research into the life expectancy of the average south african's in south africa. Its on the decrease. All other civilised countries are on the increase. Makes sense as this has either got to do with the high amount of Aids deaths in South Africa, or the fact that more people's death certificates are now not reading "murder" I think its a bit of both.

I don't really dispute this, but I was replying to your post where you wrote "who cares if crime is going down", so I assumed you thought the murder stats were true and reflective of crime. Just thought that bit was pretty contradictory.

The fact that the police themselves would rather downplay crime than fight it more intensely makes for a pretty hopeless picture.

well I had a good laugh watching e-news today with some Scottish friends when they had the police trying to imitate a roman shield wall while falling around, and what looked like a family of wombles hanging onto the back of a unimog.

so they are doing something ... what only they could explain :)

You imply you know 5 people closely in your post. Fathers of friends etc. Then you imply your situation is average or that's how you want it to appear.

Now 1 in 8300 white South Africans get murdered each year. This is a relatively speaking lot as for example 1 in 20 000 Americans get murdered on average..but in real terms it'sd an extremely low chance of anything happening. But for you to know 1 person murdered to be in the average you would need to know 8000 people. Now start writing a list of people you know closely and if you can get to 300 you are one extremely sociable person.

So think about that and you will begin to see the extreme odds of knowing someone murdered , not to mention as you implied...several.

But you can manipulate the cause of death.

You can die by means of natural causes or as a result of criminal activity.

You quoted the wrong guy. I was the one who gave you examples of people I know and close scrapes with family. Dreamking has had a family member murdered so I wouldn't even go there.

Point is, you can throw numbers and statistics around all day long. It makes no difference to those affected.
