where'd you guys hear your music (for the first time i mean)? i listen to Tuks but they have a VERY small footprint and also the alternative channel on DMX. Copacetic - you're one of the dude's with a wide range - how come you're exposed to this stuff?

The internet?

You have to decide what interests you and look for it.

Youtube, for instance, will have a just about any song under the sun, if you want to hear what a specific band sounds like.

Weird question actually. :p

There is almost infinitely more music in the world than you could possibly listen to if you dedicated every waking hour of your life to music. It's out there and not hard to find.

What sort of music do you like? I'd be happy to recommend stuff.

thanks for that copacetic. i was just wondering because there's no obvious exposure to anything other than dance, R&B, kwaito etc and yet there's still a following for alternative and rock. i like most music except dance, R&B, kwaito and middle of the road pop stuff. Rock's cool if the group's tight like Metallica, lurve Rammstein, Placebo, Coheed and Cambria, but also 30 Seconds to Mars ....... and the BEST band ever ever has to be the Sisters Of Mercy - stunning rhythm and wow lyrics.

I suppose I've lived my whole life immersed in non-conventional music culture, I remember, as a child, crawling under the tables at the local Folk Club. The commercial radio stuff has never really entered into my consciousness.

A few random bands/musicians I am listening to at the moment:

Gojira - French metal, very good.

Queens if the Stone Age - Awesome

A perfect circle - One of my all time favourite bands.

Tool - Same singer as APC, and one of the best vocalists in the world.

Puscifer - Same vocalist as above, electronic sort of stuff.

Boards of Canada - Electronic goodness for relaxation

Devin Townsend - One of the most talented and prolific musicians I've ever discovered. Awesome.

Strapping Young Lad - Devin Townsend's heavy project, perhaps a bit extreme for some.

Dredg - Awesome music, sort of rock, I suppose.

Imogen Heap - Brilliant, just brilliant.

Infected Mushroom - Psy-trance, a new obsession of mine.

Jimi Hendrix - For obvious reasons.

Katatonia - Metal, with the voice of an angel.

Peter Digital Orchestra - Cheesy French electro, which has quite grown on me.

Opeth - One of the best bands in the universe.

Prodigy - Big beat goodness.


There's no end to it.
 
ja, well, no fine :) tks for this awesome list - varied too.

i'm familiar with the Prodigy and A perfect circle - they're both yummy.
