Is any MW users part of JAWUG? I am looking at maybe joining their effort. Evaluating costs etc at this stage.

I'm looking at it as well, but I don't think too many people in the West Rand will join. From what I've read, it's mostly central JHB. But I live in the West Rand, Helderkruin, so if anyone near me wants to join let me know, we can set something up.

Shadow - I'm in Randpark Ridge ... looking into it as well.

Busy gathering components, setting up... former high site for megawan, should have weltevreden park/hillfox covered, not sure how far it will reach tho

To see how many people actually are interested, visit www.nodedb.com and go to the jhb area run by daffy

I'm also interested in this, busy with the cost side of life. In Fontainebleau, closish (i.e. within antenna range?) to regardtv I think.

registered on nodeb. It looks good if all the possibles can become fully functional nodes in JHB. I think for R2000 - R2500 you can set up quite a good system - I just need to do a little more research.

What is everyone installing......

would be interesting to know what you guys are using and where you are getting it from as i am currently also sourcing and hoping to be up by month end

Kickass72za, I am basically following the instructions on daffy's site. The most important is your receiver/transmitter setup - that is what I still have to research. I want at least a 3-5km range if thats possible. MW will be for my internet and JAWUG for online gaming etc. ATM I don't think MW users will share bandwidth across such a network - damn I said bandwidth...[8D]

Hey guys: when you've reached the point of successful installation and usage - or maybe even before that, with successful milestones reached regarding things like euipment installation, cost, etc. - how about putting together a HOWTO for the WIKI, for all to reference?

Off topic :
since you are all busy becoming high site experts, how about a little advice, I'm rather worried about my current mywireless configuration, theres a dish sitting on the highest point of my roof, up till now, lightning hasn't been a problem, being winter and all, but whats going to happen when summer hits us, do you get some sort of protector between aerial and modem/accesspoint, how does it work? where do we get it. Is it necessary???

miro.co.za

and yes, if itis a steel parabolic dish, you might have problems

Miro has decent lightning arrestors and other ancillary toys.

My suggested config is to use the 15db omni --> lighting arrestor --> 802.11b senao unit with waterproof housing. Take the CAT5 cable run from there down to a UPS with surge protection. From there into firewall box ..

Should give very good range... need to play more though. I've only done such a config on a relatively open area with LOS ... 12km odd range ...

Which UPS are you using? Mine doens't have CAT5 ports?

Also, an ethernet power injector allows your wireless unit to be very close to your antenna. What makes my option a bit more expensive is that I have to get a 120 degree antenna for optimal preformance

Anyone willing to donate?

erm...12km with a 15dbi omni? You're kidding. That's almost impossible.
Lightning arrestors is not enough. You'll need to earth the antenna aswell. Also, best lightning protectors are the ones that use a gas tube that explodes when hit by lightning.

Anyway you look at it, mounting an antenna on your roof isn't safe. Don't try this with a thatch roof [;)]

Gas tube arrestors are still not fast enough. I have seen first hand the devistation that i direct hit to an AP can cause, belive me - its not pretty ;)
