I am looking into switching to MWEB 384kbps, uncapped, shaped. I know unshaped is better (or so I heard), but at the moment I do not have that kind of money, so im happy enough with shaped.

Can anyone tell me if its worth it? What I want to use it for is youtube movies, browsing, gaming (now and then) and also residents here is into the Facebook games like farmville (not sure if that falls under normal browsing).

Thanks,
-Braclo

If you're on a budget it is perfect. Our usage is around 50GB a month on 384 uncapped. If you're patient you can even watch youtube videos :)

It's very very difficult to get more than 30gb a month because of the daytime shaping - which extends until 1am now incidentally. Their shaping system is legendary !

Thanks so far on the replies :D @Lounger - Is their shaping that bad even on 384??

Is there another isp one can go for, for an uncapped account that is roughly the same price as mweb

yes there is loads, all IS based sadly, unless you pay extra for openweb gold

I have heard people talking about IS based, what does that mean exactly, and why sadly? Also why would openweb gold be better? I apologize for my ignorance regarding this :D

IS is having huge problems, thats why i sed sadly. IS based= they get there bandwitdh from IS

openweb gold, speeds is really great, as you have choice of which backbone you can use, vodacom being the better one it seems.

I use 30-40 Gigs a month on average
Youtube will be painfully slow so forget that

Thanks for the replies guys. Problem is there are no dslam ports available in my area, hasn't been for a year. I assume it is not a priority for them, so I had to go the wimax route, which only has speeds of 512 Kb :/ I want an uncapped option though, so if the speed isn't that great, it is okay.

Do you know what does mweb shape on 384? For example gaming, youtube, facebook games, voip etc. and how badly do they shape?

If it uses bandwidth, they shape it. Everything except browsing and normal program updates. Torrents and things like Rapidshare are - well we could call them blocked because of the speed. If you try those in the early hours you get some joy. Gaming is also treated like that, with a high latency even at night.

Well there must be someone here that is on the 384 uncapped shaped service. Can anyone give me numbers by how badly it is shaped? And like i said before, gaming, youtube, facebook games, voip, etc.

In the beginning of the month (HTTP):
During weekdays - 10-15kB/s (kiloBytes) if your lucky, otherwise 6 to 10.
After +-18:00 sometimes only +-22:00 - 15 to 22.
After 01:00 (+Sat>01:00/Sunday/Mon<07:00) - 38kB/s.

When you overdo it and end up in the top download group:
Weekdays - 2.5kB/s to 6.
Nights <01:00 - 6 to 15.
Weekends from Sat>01:00 to Mon<07:00 - I think 38kB/s (Seacom that provide to IS is f-ed(?) so about 22 at the moment).

Wow... that is pretty bad. Guess the 384 uncapped shaped service is a bit useless.
