Hey guys i'm quite new to the whole forum thing. For the last few months i've been experiencing very slow speeds. I have 4meg uncapped line. It gets so bad that simple browsing even local sites is painful EVEN when no downloads are running or updates. When i try to run speed tests it takes forever to load, like now its been loading for the last 30min. Ive contacted my ISP and TELKOM but they havent been helpful(100 TIMES). What could be the prob ? I have a w40 billion router. Anyway do you think my routers damaged ? Need feedback ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:(:(:(:(

Hi gyver833,

What DL speeds are you getting? What time of the day is the speeds slow? PM me your MWEB account details and I'll investigate further for you.

Kind regards

MWEB operations

Well it's slow throughout the day. I even try browsing after 12 (midnight) expecting the browsing to be quicker. I tried running another test at speed test.net and it's taking it's grannys time.
Details: sbvl, tel:, southbound

remove your telephone number, unless you want some creep calling you at midnight

EVen tried going to the mweb site and it's been loading for more than 10min....i think that gives a clear indication of how slow it is. It's really frustrating. Hope you manage to find a solution...

This seems to me like a fault with your telephone line and not with Mweb.

Could you perhaps log in on your router and then post your ADSL statistics here: sync speed, line attenuation and SNR margins

I must say that my MWEB speeds on the 4Meg line?4Meg package are very unpredictable. Average speed tests report perfectly normal DL and UL speeds but browsing is often painful (youtube etc often impossible) and I'm having endless issues with Skype. Could the Skype issue be shaping related?

wmongie: first look at your ADSL line's statistics and test with another (unshaped) ISP account before blaming Mweb uncapped.

I'm not saying that the fault isn't with Mweb. There are just so many issues that can cause a connection to be slow and people usually just start to jump on the ISP for providing a "poor" service.
After hours Mweb connections should be able to run at pretty much full speed.

You can always PM Mweb Operations user with your Mweb details.

its because of the shaping,if u lucky ul get speeds of a 384k line on ports that r shaped to the max

Not necessarily.

If you have an IS uncapped account, then I would agree that the cause could be due to shaping. Of course if you have terrible torrent speeds, then it's highly likely to be due to the shaping too.

With Mweb uncapped you should get pretty good download speeds, even after like 200GB.

i wish that was true for me,but i hardly ever get good speeds when pulling off news.mweb. Even my paid for Astraweb account suffers the same fate

I'll give it a bash. I am comparing my experiences with Mweb to my previous experiences with Afrihost and Webafrica with whom I had much less issues while using skype at the same time of day. I spend about 8 hours a day on Skype so I have a pretty good idea of what to expect and that's why I've been disappointed with Mweb's service so far.

Mweb's consumer uncapped isn't really meant for business / during office use, so you can expect shaping/congestion during office hours on their network.

IS uncapped might be better, until you reach a certain threshold and then they shape your connection's speed to the ground, where as with Mweb the shaping would remain the same even if you've downloaded a few 100GB.

The past few days our Mweb Business 4Mbps connection has been quite slow too, but I suspect that it is simply an overloaded exchange/DSLAM in Technopark, Stellenbosch, because the latencies often exceed 1000ms to the first hop.

Your ADSL statistics are fine, except for the downstream sync speed:
Us rate: 512
Ds Rate: 4092
US margin: 12
DS margin: 30
DS line attenuation: 33
US line attenutaion: 17
The Ds rate should be 4096kbps and not 4092kbps. I'm sure what exactly the causes for this are though.

Did you try another computer or router? Sometimes its something on the internal network slowing it down
