I have a Mweb 4Mbps premium uncapped data account at R539 with a Telkom line of 10 Mbps. I am now considering a 100Gb capped data at R449 at any line speed .It seems to me the only advantage of the premium uncapped is that it is not "throttled" . I use less than 80 Gb per month . Any advice would be appreciated.

Capped Crystal Web account, runs at line speed.

Why not just get 10Meg Standard uncapped instead?

You should downgrade to 4Mbps Standard if your usage is that low, or go with 6/10Mbps Standard.

Thanks Chevron My concern is this whole business of " throttling". I am not sure if it is that important.

It should only concern you if your usage falls outside of the above thresholds. Throttling is a much better policy than shaping.

Why?

You can't schedule your torrents for after hours?

Because everything is and will remain unshaped at all times until the throttle is reached, instead of hit and miss shaping according to network busyness, etc.

Nothing wrong with downloading after hours, just bear in mind it counts towards your threshold which you should stay within.

Anyway, this is off topic. OP clearly isn't a downloader, and most people that download do not use MWEB as they value quantity over quality.

On Mweb premium accounts? That's utter BS. On an Mweb premium account and regularly getting shaped, not even close to reaching the threshold limit.

That's for downloading, unless you're being shaped on other protocols which is unheard of, in which case I'd suggest PMing MWEB Guy.

Few people use MWEB for downloading. Those that do schedule downloads for evenings/early mornings. Suspect this is your issue.

No difference between Premium and Standard. Downgrade if you're not even close to reaching the threshold.

So you're retracting this statement?

Because everything is and will remain unshaped at all times until the throttle is reached

I'm not close to reaching the threshold specifically because one is not able to download during convenient times.

I did not mean to include downloading in "everything", I meant everything except downloading. I was discussing it directly with Chevron who is well-versed in the ISP arena. We were talking MWEB Uncapped, and most people know that downloads get shaped during hours. Chevron does. Downloading/p2p received the lowest priority with MWEB.

The same thing happens with other ISPs whose policy is shaping, and not throttling.

If I had been discussing it with you, and had I known that you were not aware that MWEB shape downloads during hours, I would have separated downloading from "everything". But I'm sure you know this already. And of course there's a reason you're still with them. :) ;)

Yeah, the reason being that the family member whose account it is, is hanging onto it for dear life because of a lousy email address. If it was up to me, Mweb would've been cancelled long ago!

Then pay the ±R45 per month to retain the email address, and move to supposedly greener pastures. They'll likely be cheaper, making up for the R45.

Good luck!

MOrning Thomas, the 6Mbps or 10Mbps standard packages could work for you.

The thresholds imposed on these packages are approximately 150GB and 250GB respectively.

Let me know what you decide or if you require my assistance in any way.

I used to have a Mweb Premium 4 mbit uncapped account (R539) basically from the day they started it in March 2009 or was it 2010.
By 2013 they throttled and shaped me so bad that I dumped them for a 50+50 gig capped account at AfriHost for R199.
I use a lot of p2p (torrents) as I'm a game developer and it's a standard of choice and during hours (which is when we work) it sucked bad.
On 1st Jan 2014 I switched to AH capped and have never looked back as I get the full 424 KB/s, 24/7/365, something you do not get at mweb, regardless of what package you have or how much you pay :(
Also regarding email address, never ever use your ISP's email option, that's what gmail.com is for :)
