Mweb Abuse Notification

Well at least you guys got a warning!

I woke up this morning and found my uncapped mweb adsl service terminated apparently due to network abuse. They said they sent me warnings, but I never use the mweb email (yahoo is good enough for me), so I never knew... The funny thing is that my login still works in mweb, and when I log in trying to find my email warnings, my inbox is empty, so perhaps they have just deleted my emails when they terminated my account, I will never know. It would be nice for mweb to at least put a "read receipt" on those warnings and perhaps give me a call before they just went ahead and terminate my account...

I do wonder how much I d/led though, I always kept it to around 150gb, will be interesting to see how much I actually used...

Does anyone know what happens after they terminate the account? Is there any penalty fees etc involved? Anyways, off to a new ISP that doesn't have these FUP BS on uncapped products!

If you download more than 450gb on a 4mbps line you will get a warning. I have now moved to open web gold and have had zero issues. Mweb isn't really uncapped.

Not true. I've had my 4Mbps shaped uncapped Mweb account for two years, and many times done more than 450GB in a month. Have yet to receive a warning.

I average between 400 and 600gb in a month, and have never had a warning.

What I do:

Limit my speeds to 300kb/s ( Just so that I can use the rest of the internet for other stuff, occasionally unthrottling if I am in a hurry )
Don't go absolutely insane on the downloading. I've got 20TB of disk here on my desk, and it's getting dangerously close to being full - Where do people store the stuff they download? Or do you guys delete after you are done? ( I am a bit of a pack-rat, nothing gets deleted )
Try and do my downloads overnight, since that's the best time to go for it
Never ever torrent - Subscribe to one of the various oneclick hosts, for like R70/mo you are practically immune to being traced for your downloads, and you get guaranteed speeds.

If I remember correctly, MWEBs reps on the forums at one point said they will never give a definite number because it then gives people scope as to how to avoid repercussions for "abuse" by narrowly avoiding it (or something to that effect).

I was extremely impressed with a month long trial of Openweb Gold in November 2012 and I highly recommend it to anyone! Even though I remain an MWEB customer (for now), this recent price shake up is now a do or die for MWEB in my opinion.

Delete. The internet is my "hard drive". I don't personally have a drive larger than 500 GB.

And what happens if you suddenly need a particular movie? Ain't nobody got time for a 4-7GB download.

It fits into my 500 GB window. Much of Hollywood aren't worth repeating.

4 GB only takes an hour.

Oh and my Microserver still only has the included 250 GB drive.

Yes but what happens if the internet fails us - like a Zombie apocalypse or something?
WE NEED TO BE PREPARED PEOPLE!

I guess i'll get into your minset when we get to cheap and stable 10 Mb/s lines in South Africa.
For now, Streaming is not an option unless Im in bed on the iPad with the "MovieBox" App - that works in High Quality, even on my 1 Mbs line...

I've had the same issue with Mweb. They cancelled my account & the best part the notification emails were sent to a mweb email account i NEVER use. I told them to forward all email invoices to my personal email address & surprise, surprise it always came through to my personal email address.

This line i found rather amusing:

".. shows repeated instances of prolonged download sessions at line, or near line speeds which is placing an undue burden on our network and is not in keeping with our Acceptable Use Policy."

So should i accept Mweb not giving me what a paid for? I pay for a 1mb line, so i should be happy with 512 speeds?

This made me lol big time:

Should you wish to request a reconnection to the cancelled product, your motivational request should be via e-mail to us and we would escalate the request to MWEB Management. We cannot however, guarantee that the request would be successful.

I have to write them a motivational letter begging them to reactivate my account & have it upgraded to an unshaped account, where they get more of my hard earned money. HOWLER!

I have to beg for a service that i was paying for, for real??

Good riddance to Mweb, absolute crooks. Legal theft imo, false advertising with their uncapped accounts.

So you've decided 200gb is an ok limit, and everyone should comply?
Where did I say that? All I asked was what these guys quoting 1TB monthly usage is downloading...Its their accounts and I can't dictate to them, I'm just curious and that's it.

Glorious HD linux distros.

I got booted off MWEB for not abiding by their AUP - I share the sentiment that uncapped and unlimited should be exactly that - uncapped and unlimited. By defintion of the two words having MWEB market it as such and then booting people off the service for utilizing it as such is just ridiculous.

On a bright note though - there are much better service providers with a much better tolerance for 'downloaders' and a much better service level.

Oh and MWEB charged me a full months payment even though they suspended my account in the first week after full payment was made in advance. Daylight robbery - but kudos to a company that can fool the general public in providing a sub-par service and then to top it off - pocket your money after suspending your service.

I wouldnt touch MWEB these days with a barge pole and i'd strongly suggest new subscribers to rather seek alternatives to MWEB
