Mweb Abuse Notification

Just got my 2mb trial account with OpenWeb after requesting it 10min ago. Really impressed with how they handle things & it's running smoothly. Looks like i'll never look back.

Thanks Mweb for opening my eyes to a much better ISP!

It was meant to be used in conjunction with the terms and conditions and acceptable use policy, lol

So what if i'm connected to security cameras and literally stream footage of a property 24/7?

Is I not using the internet correctly?

It's too soon after the days of pay-per-gig for us to be this ungrateful for accounts that give us data at less than R5 a gig

How am I ungrateful if I pay for a service that I can't use as I want to.

This I have a problem with. Advertising as uncapped subject to T&Cs and an AUP is not deceptive. Had they advertised without mentioning those two and then called you out on usage then I would say fair enough.

It becomes deceptive when the AUP/FUP amounts to a cap, which in the case of MWEB, by all accounts, it does.

Do you know how much a product would cost if it was priced for everyone using full speed 24/7? Oh but not everyone uses if full speed 24/7; you want it so that only you and handful of other abusers can use it full speed 24/7 while the other 95% use normal or sub-normal amounts but still pay the same as you.

I don't & can't use my line at full speed 24/7 due to the shaping & that's exactly how we were told it would work: 'As long as you don't bypass the shaping, you'll be fine.' but it turned out to be a lie & the AUP/FUP is so vague it can literally be used against any user; no matter how much they dl/stream.

Oh, & I'm still paying R488/month for 1mb AIC from MWEB; whereas the price since ~October has been R339. MWEB have now called me & want to argue that I never requested to be placed on the new package even though they had told me back in Sep/Oct that they would happen ASAP. Yet another MWEB ripoff #345.6c.

Keeper, ISPs don't love you "heavy" users, they tolerate you. Some days the tolerance wears a bit thin and they tell one of you to leave, and you go to the next ISP who does the same thing. Some have thicker skins than others, some have less abuse and can absorb yours better but the end of the day that is all it is - abuse.

Nothing personal but no ISP wants you. ISPs exist to make money, they don't make money on people using the service 24/7. That simple, as I said nothing personal because this applies to many out there, it's just business.

Then why advertise it as uncapped? Uncapped = 24/7 connected to the internet, otherwise we would go back to "Dialup" and only connect when you get to your PC? I agree with you that they are not targeting me but I am actually trying to accommodate them.

Openweb won't do that to me, because they do not monitor their users internet usage.

If you pay for a 1Mbs unlimited account, that is what you are supposed to get - 1Mbs of unlimited usage.

ISPs that tell you to "stop" after downloading a certain amount of data, is NOT uncapped.
ISPs that throttle you, is NOT giving you the 1Mbs you paid for. It doesn't matter if you download 10GBs of email, or HHTP, or NNTP or P2P, or VOIP - data is data.
In fact, ISPs that give you good HHTP but no P2P, is not giving you the internet you paid for.

What business of them is it to tell YOU what ways you should use to download... data is data is data.

You guys can defend MWeb as much as you want, but if they throttle you, you are not getting the 1MBs you paid for. If you are told to stop, it's not Uncapped.

I'm fighting for net neutrality - if you're happy with your ISP throttling you with their fake uncapped, hey, go nuts.... I for one think it's BS what you guys are going through.

Are you implying that OpenWeb (or any ISP) has no contention ratio on thier products? Don't be fooled - you're a marketing gimmick. They're subject to the same costs as every other ISP, and at the moment the cost of providing a single user full line speed 24/7 is far greater than what you're paying them.

For now they're willing to eat that as advertising cost (and judging by the number of people punting them, it's worthwhile).

I have no idea what their contention ratio is, how many users they have, or even what their budgets are. (For OpenWeb, M-Web or any other Web)

I can tell you this though:
1. OpenWeb shapes their network, just like any other network - the difference is by how much.
So how much does OpenWeb shape you ask? Well, I Literally have never felt it. It feels like i'm on a 100% unshaped product.

2. OpenWeb does not monitor your usage. at all.
Frankly they can not even tell you how much you download, because how much you download is not important to them, you just use the internet how much you want.

3. OpenWeb let's you encrypt using 256-bit SLL. <-- This is a very big plus.
No, us OpenWeb users don't enable SSL to "bypass" throttling, because as I said, openWeb will never throttle you anyway! No, we encrypt for security reasons.
Do you want anyone to be able to see what you download? I would think not.

They don't monitor WHAT you download, HOW MUCH you download, they don't THROTTLE you, and they certainly won't e-mail you telling you what a naughty "abuser" you have been.

They claim they shape, but as I've said, I certainly have never felt it.

Don't you feel special, now that you're using a premium product?
Oh yes! Special enough not to turn on torrents lest I get banned from the service I already paid for.

Luckily this is the last month that I'll be using this premium product.

About 1TB a month on 4Mbps line. Well that is what earned me my lifetime ban ;) also tried replying to those warning emails, and adjusted my patterns as per OP. they kept saying we don't care how much you use it when you use, but stop abusing it!? Useless, been with afrihost since and haven't had any of the issues that plague other forumites here.

Right there with you. Just change ISP.
I am with OpenWeb and don't manage downloads anymore. During the day they throttle a little bit. No emails. No warnings. MY internet :)

What about Netflix and Hulu, you could easily do 400gb on those services alone per month

Considering the best quality HD video on those services average @ 2-3 GB, you would need to watch 4x 2 hour movies a day to reach 400gb. To do that, you would need to be a well-off retired individual or unemployed... oh... and single.

1080p movie can be around 10-12Gb.

No. They are MP4 format for 1080p streaming. MP4 for straeming has a lower bit-rate and Mp4's in general are 1/2 to 1/3 the size of an avi and 1/4 to 1/5th the size of mpg. 3-4 gb is standard size for 1080p 2 hour movies on Netflix. If you save the stream to disk using VLC and leave the file format in it's native mp4 format, that's what it works out to in size. i-Tunes is the same as well.

Anyone have any experience with the new Telkom uncapped packages and how they are holding up for heavy downloaders?

blah blah blah....uncapped meaning....unlimted....
they can throttle you and they can shape you. get over it.
If you break the shaping rules then yes...you broke the rules and they kick you.
easy as that. now lets get on with our lives and vote with our money.
it seems to be working thus far.
