I finally managed to convince the parents. I also realize that Mweb is the most expensive ISP out there, but we need to keep the email address, so Mweb it is.

I combed through the All-inclusive contract and found a problem. The 1Gb package only allows 1 concurrent connection. If I understand that correctly I can't hook up two PCs to the modem/router, right?

If I connect the modem to a separate switch and then plug in the PCs there, does that still count as 2 concurrent connections? The only other option that I see is internet connection sharing, which I'm not too keen on.

Can somebody pls confirm: If the modem is locked then that means I can't use e.g. axxess prepaid local adsl right?

Thanks

"1 concurrent connection" means that you can only be logged in with your mweb username and password at 1 location/1 router/1 device.

So yes, you would have to enable Internet Connection Sharing on your primary PC (server).

Your other, easier option is to buy an ADSL Router that will let you share your internet connection all over your house and network. That is what most of us do.

You should be able to get an ADSL router from Matrix Warehouse/Incredible Connection/Hi Fi Corporation/Second Hand through the Junk Mail.

They are not difficult to set up... anyone here can help you as well.

just to clarify, if the router is locked to Mweb, you will not be able to use any other ISP on it... have not heard of Mweb doing this though.

but if it is, then you can just use the mweb top-up service at R99 per Gig.

And no, you can plug as many computers as you want into the router, that still only counts as one connection.

Conspirator .. DO NOT NOT NOT NOT even consider signing with MWeb as your ADSL ISP of choice.
It's madness!

Phone MWEB and get the Mail-Only deal which is like 30 bucks a month for them bastards to keep your mail account running. You can access your mail from anywhere then.

Then use WebAfrica or AXXESS or even Teklom DO to get the ADSL connection as well as the ADSL ISP portion.

Teklom DO will give you a 4 port ADSL router (which does wireless as well) for free, gratis, nothing, and you can bypass the install costs by doing a self-install. Just choose the option that does not involve a 2 year contract. I don't quite know what axxess and webafrica have available as options for a line and isp package.

Going through MWEB only is madness.

Once you've got your stuff setup, create a gmail account and start getting the users to move over to the free service, and eventually stop using mweb mail.

Please get away from MWEB - there are plenty better options available

Follow Stoke's advice and RUN RUN !!

You can go online with as many PCs as you like as long as the router is handling the connection. Thats the way you want to do it anyway as it affords you the protection of a NAT firewall.

I fully agree with the sentiment put forward - Mweb is not the best choice and staying with them just for the email address is like not moving from the trailer park to a mansion because you cant be bothered to tell people you've moved.

Leave the trailer park behind. ;)

Thanks for answering all my noob questions guys.

Sweet. Problem solved there.

You okes will have to explain that a bit. The contract is 12 months. First 6 months R179 thereafter R219, including adsl line. i.e. average of R199 for first year.

If I I go with WA, then its R70 for a gig and R152 for the adsl line. So R222.

So I'm obviously missing something here if MWeb is that evil? The modem is locked, which blows, but the monthly fee looks OK. Especially since I have to add R39 to WA to keep the email addr.

just phone mweb and ask them to increase the amount of concurrent sesssions.
Cool. But if Garyvdh is right then both PCs will count as 1 concurrent connection, so it won't be necessary.

MWeb's deal is fine up until you've used up your 1 gig, top-up gigs are way overpriced and if you use the router they give you you have no choice.

Webafrica's all in one - http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/complete/ - r149 for the first 6 months - r199 there after (if I'm reading it correctly)

Even if you're determined to stay with mweb at least do them the favour of setting up a gmail account for them and forward all the mweb mail to it. Eventually the only thing going to the mweb address will be the bill.

I must agree with these guys... I only pay Mweb for the mail only option. I use WebAfrica as my ISP and I bought my own router.

I hear you guys. I'd go with WA/OpenWeb too, but the parents & email addr...

I'll talk to them, maybe go for the R39 MWeb mailbox, but in the end MWeb adsl is better than no adsl. :)

The WA is 24 months while MWeb is 12 months, but I guess the unlocked modem and reduced price more than make up for that.

Thanks for the advice & hopefully I'll be surfing in medium-band style soon too...

Buy your own router and pay per month, seriously. There are better ADSL deals coming out all the time and you really don't want to be locked into a contract of any length. No offense to WA who are awesome but I'm sure on a personal level the guys working there would agree ;)

Last day to apply for self install and get a free modem was today :(
And yes, dont go with mweb...and definitely dont get bound to a contract...to any ISP

Its just advices from us...if u ignore it...u will regret one day(or ur parents) ;)

I wonder if the offer of the free modem will still be on their website come tomorrow.

The Telkom modem deal was what triggered this entire thing. Parents panicked.

The modem that comes with the WA is the Billion 7300 right? And its not locked?

Dunno, I have a feeling the powers that be are gonna go with MWeb, irrespective of what I say.

Not totally true. You still get the modem for free but from 1 August 2007 you have to sign a 24 Month contract. But true.

@Conspirator: Just go with a Do package - simplest and probably cheapest. The latest Telkom WiFi router Zyxel IAD P2602 also includes Voip functionality. Similar routers sell for around R1500. No other ISPs offer a Voip router. It's worth taking a look in my opinion. You can just sign up with a cheap international Voip service like 12voip and make free international calls from your Telkom phone. If you need extra bandwidth Telkom always works out cheaper.
