MWeb adsl

Why is everyone against Mweb?Ihave been with them for 9 years.Iwill admit that I am seriously thinking of changing to pay as you use as I seldom use my cap and they are overpriced.I would require a decent mailbox with anti spam and anti virus safeguards. The ISP must have stable speeds as Mweb does. However which ISP?Ihave no contract except month to month and my router is my own. Both my daughter and I access the web at the same time with no loss of speed. And no if I purchase bandwith it will be by card.Any suggestions which ISP?Thanks guys.I have a telkom 1024 line.

Any other isp (Axxess, WebAfrica, Openweb, even Telkom) + gmail.

Thanks for the reply.I forgot to mention that I only use month to month contracts or no contracts Although I have thought about Axxess. Is your speed affected by the distance between you and the ISP?If so I live in Fourways Gauteng.

Nope - makes no difference. :)

Another question Bwana. Is it worth going unshaped? I don't download music but my daughter does from P2P when she attempts to use the cap that is left occasionally.I simply surf the web.I wish for a decent music download site that is legal and can be paid for with a credit card.My taste is music from ihe earely 60's which is not always available in SA in cd stores.I am not necessay trying to save money I would rather have value for money.

@placebo
By the way gmail is google's mail service.
Just a thought.

As somebody has said, you can sign with MWEB for mailbox only.

Mweb is ok but there are others also with better options.

P2P may go slightly faster but it isn't worth the investment in unshaped. For the extra cost you may as well go buy the CDs you ...er.. your daughter is downloading ;)

There's almost no difference between the speed of a shaped and unshaped account. The only difference of late seems to be that unshaped offers a better latency, so unless you're into online gaming or VoIP then there's really no point in getting an unshaped account.

Just adding on to what the others have said unless I know someone is definitely going to need unshaped I usually recommend that they go for the much cheaper shaped and upgrade at a later stage.

You can even buy one gb of unshaped in the form of pay-as-you-go and use it when the need arises, plus it never expires (afaik).

Try eMusic.com. There's no problem in paying with a South African credit card and their selection is big, although it's not iTunes. If your taste in music is for the older stuff, then it might just suit you. I've been more than happy with them since November last year. They work on a subscription basis, starting at 30 tracks per month for $9.99. Try the link here, in case you have difficulty getting past their home page.

@placebo: Telkom is the only ISP that does Chinese maths i.e. pay for 1GB get 1GB, 2GB get 4GB, 3GB get 6GB. Consequently their prices are the lowest for bandwidth exceeding 1GB. Your daughter should be much happier if she can download twice as much as she did before for the same price.

bwana: I've not seen any prepaids that never expire. Axxess expires in 12 months, which is almost as good.

Yotch: Once they hooked a couple of people on 24 month contracts the Chinese math is gonna disappear, me thinks. If I read correctly they already reduced it from 100% to 50% over.

I just read the Routesentry thread. Locked Mweb router is useless for that.

You okes will have to explain that a bit. The contract is 12 months. First 6 months R179 thereafter R219, including adsl line. i.e. average of R199 for first year.

Noooooooooo!
Looks like you fell for the misleading ads.
R179+R219=R398 for one year.
Where is the "average"?

lol. Now thats Chinese math. MWeb Offer is:
Month 1-6: R179 pm
Month 7-12: R219 pm

If I average that out over the year (So that I can compare it with other ISPs) it gives R199 per month. My post was a bit vague on the "year" part. My apologies.

Includes locked  modem.

I'm probably gonna go with WA.

@Conspirator: As we know all too well, Telkom holds all the cards in the ADSL game. No matter what happens Telkom will always be able to offer the best prices. I was with WA and changed to Telkom because it works out much cheaper. You should seriously consider the Telkom Do offers - in addition to the cheapest bandwidth prices in the market you effectively get a *second* Voip telephone line via the ISD P2602 router. No other ISP will give you this option. It's really inconvenient to have to use Voip from a PC. If you have a router that can do this directly from a normal telephone this is a big advantage in my opinion. Take a trip to a Telkom shop and see whether you can still get the free router with a self-install. I use www.voipstunt.com as my Voip service provider and it saves me a fortune in international calls every month. It costs me R24 per month to do 20 hours of free international calls to Japan, the US etc. You can even make free calls to Telkom landlines if you sign up with www.12voip.com. In countries like the US, UK, Australia etc. millions of people use Voip as their primary telephone connection because it costs much less. Once you get your ADSL connection you are probably going to want to use Voip and then you are going to have to buy an ATA etc. which will cost you an extra R600+. If you have an integrated Voip device even people in your family who have no idea about computers can still make cheap Voip calls using a normal Telkom phone. This is a real benefit.

If you have problems with your line at a later stage I'm sure that you'll get the best service from Telkom rather than having to go through an ISP. Most people on this Forum use Telkom because of the cheaper bandwidth even if they don't like to admit it.

I'm already starting to see Telkom logic at work: The site that's meant to promote the Do packages is so full of flash that it takes forever to load on anything but adsl. But that's no problem since all the visitor visiting the site have Do packages already? rofl

@Yotch: Is the Telkom modem locked?

If I have it correctly.
Telkom DO Closer 1. I think that is what they call it is R499.
R300 for line rental, 1000 free standard time minutes, 1 hour free per call during callmore time and all cell calls at per second billing.
R199 for ADSL 384k with 1 Gig cap and includes the Telkom Internet account.

No more free Modem as of 1 August. You have to sign a 24 month contract to get the free modem. But you can still do the self install.

I have not known Telkom to do such things.

The free modem is still being offered on their site.
You also qualify for a free Wifi modem if you sign a
24-month contract or if you chose to self install the DSL service.
