MWEB CEO explains their Uncapped ADSL Acceptable Use Policy

Here on M-Web we do 300+ GB per month. But there are some moaners that complain about P2P or high usage destination getting throttled. We just advise them to go to Afrihost instead :p

You've lost the plot long ago. No-one seriously moans about wanting to do 1TB per month, although it's possible to do that without bypassing shaping, people are moaning because MWEB are cancelling accounts for abuse without quantifying what abuse is. It's like ticketing people on the German autobahn for breaking the speed limit but not saying what it is. Obviously even the autobahn has a speed limit - if you tried going at Mach 1 they would stop you. So if 300GB is OK, I would be satisfied but it may NOT be ok. You may be an ABUSER at 300GB per month. Certainly with shaping if you're doing 300GB /m on torrents than you are downloading virtually 24/7 or at least 12 h per day overnight. That could be called abuse if going by the AUP.

On the other hand if you are doing 300GB pm of unshaped emails, online banking and computer updates - say you have 5 pcs/macs at home and update the AV, service packs for Office, Photoshop, Apple OSX, Final Cut, plugins, 3rd party apps, shareware updates, etc -- all that would fly over HTTP and it would all be unshaped traffic, you certainly wouldn't spend 12h per night on that sort of thing. That would not be abuse in my mind even if it's heavy use.

They can't cancel my account - they can shape it yes - but not cancel it. Have you got any proof of this new canceling practice ?

The forum is full of threads of people called and MWEB confirmed it - you have to upgrade to Addict/Business or you must cancel. Where someone is said to have bypassed shaping they are not given an option.

Of course all of these things could be lies and MWEB guy could also be joking or not really an MWEB guy. That's the best proof we have.

Obviously if you are bypassing shaping then they can do that - I do not see a problem with it. In fact, I rely on MWeb to throttle my P2P traffic in a way they see fit so that it does not negatively impact others users on their network.

Thats the thing - they are making people move who use to much data.... even those not bypassing shaping, there was one guy that just used rapidshare and got banned.

I mean - I haven't used more than 80GB in one month on my 4MB line - but I still don't know what their limit is.

Dang! That sucks ballix. Well they should try it with me cause I'm a troll.

My plan is to just have the debit order reversed, and pay them pro-rate for the amount of days I've used that month, basically, R539/31*(days used) when/if they decide that 80GB is the new cut off limit :)

Okay enough of this ****! "Abuse" of one's connection is an ARTIFICIAL term invented by South African ISP's to shift blame away from the abysmal services they offer (specifically the concept of shaped and unshaped services). I have lived and worked in several places around the world and have used fantastic broadband internet that was much faster than most of what SA ISP's can offer, at lower prices, and have met many people from many different countries and guess what? NONE of them have ever heard of the term "shaped" or "unshaped" or "abuse" regarding internet services. They also haven't heard of a condition whereby one has to by slivers of (overpriced) internet time (essentially the "capped" and "uncapped" concepts SA uses), they have all always been familiar with "always-on", "uncapped" internet.

That illustrates how far behind SA has been ( and still is) in the ISP industry. There is no excuse: if SA really wants to be a player on the international scene it needs to have an internet service that matches those available in so-called 1st-world countries.

Tanya. Everyone is starting to get sick of your complaining. MWEB doesn't make you happy. We get that. Why not try openweb gold or some other more expensive uncapped package that may meet your needs?

Seriously now.

She has the right to air her views as many times as she wish, place her on "ignore" if you do not wish to read her complaining. FFS, grow up.

Maybe because everyone except 5 posters on MyADSL are actually extremely happy with a cheap uncapped account? It works perfectly well as a shaped uncapped account for me. Nothing else to it for all I care.

And I am really uncapped in the amount I can download given the shaping. I think we all knew we had to accept this given South Africa's limitations in bandwidth.

There are no limitation in SA bandwidth that was a fallacy invented and introduced by Telkom to keep the profits high, All providers are happy with the status quo.

I am on a 4mb uncapp standard package and is being throttled since the 25th of Jan. When I reached 100GB I was throttled. Which is fine, until my account is still throttled after the first of FEB. I phone Mweb and asked why I am I still being throttled they told me I will being throttled under a rolling period or until I use less data. I am now lodging a complaint to the South African National Consumer Association against Mweb for not giving me what I am paying for a 4mb standard uncap account.

Take your business elsewhere. Complaining won't help.

Necro-bumping aside, I'm sure many of would be interested to know the outcome of the complaint. Please keep us updated.

Have you read the Terms and Conditions and Acceptable Usage Policy? Have you looked into similar cases, which have already been ruled on?

Pffft the necro is weak in this one as I've raised elder threads in comparison

Moving away from Mweb helps everyone. You are happier because you get better service, Mweb is happy because they are busy closing their non profitable ADSL business and by leaving them you are helping them shut it down.
