MWEB Gaming Feedback

I have a question regarding how MWEB uncapped handles gaming in general.
Now I am not talking about WoW so I know I am going to be ignored  But I am going to ask anyway.

I play several MMO’s and fly IL2 and Rise of Flight and I will be getting Il2 Cliffs of Dover, Total War Shogun 2 and Battlefield 3 when they are released in March or later. I also play Pirates of the Burning Sea another MMO
Almost all-modern games have massive online components to them and ping and lag are major issues.
It is therefore important to know if the protocols used by games are being throttle or shaped.
While everyone has identified the problems face by WoW it seems other games are being ignored.
Can we have some indication that Mweb games will be testing these games and identifying the protocols they use to allow them to avoid the dreaded P2P sanctions being imposed 

Hi SHVAK

You certainly won't get ignored, we love all games and all gamers equally and I will certainly be trying out one, or two of those titles myself :)

To address some of your questions our traffic managers operate on the principle of deep packet inspection and prioritize traffic according to the packet signatures.

Or in English :D it looks at every packet, decides on what type of packet it is and gives it the appropriate treatment. Traffic which is classified as gaming on our network is given the best treatment possible and we do everything that we can to ensure that the network is performing optimally to provide a solid gaming experience to our customers.

The traffic signatures that we use come from a vast library of signatures of known traffic types which is regularly updated by the product vendor. This library contains signatures for most known games and new signature packs are deployed on a regular basis as they become available.

In addition to this should you experience problems with a particular game and you believe that it might be caused by an incorrect classification please let us know and we will be able to look at the traffic classifications to see if any adjustments can be made.

Kind Regards
Will

nope on 4mbit. I must say a lot of the time its fine but sometimes, especially during working hours, it can be rather difficult to login and start some games

Hi Lobsey

I'm not sure what would be causing that as hereticangel mentioned we now have steam servers on our network, both in JHB and Cape Town and the rather lengthy process of updating them with the full steam content payload has been completed. In addition to this we are hoping that at some point in the not too distant future Valve will be deploying an updated region list which will allow more control for South African customers over which servers they use.

Good good. There are a few titles coming out that I am deffo going to play. Crysis 2, Bulletstorm and Duke Nukem Forever.

Hi Rohan

I can't give you definite answers on this yet, but we will certainly be expanding the Gamezone environment in the year ahead and I'm sure there will be a lot of exciting content for our gaming customers to look forward to.

On a lighter note - In my cupboard there is a hat with "Duke Nukem Forever was released today" printed on it, which I have been waiting patiently to eat for the last 5 years :D

Thats nice .. thanx MWEB!!! tired of downloading steam updates at 10kbs !!!

Hi will. Are PSN and Xbox live priorities considered at all?

In terms of the traffic priority these are given the same treatment as all other gaming traffic - if you're asking about content, or the future of having any content from these networks on the MWEB network I'm afraid the answer to that right now is I simply don't know.

Will, My net is acting up again.... My pings to the wow server are great like sub 300ms. but as soon as i log in, i get huge lag spikes and like 5k ms.... Something has seriously gone wrong... :(

OMG i thought i was the only one, ive had this problem for a few days now and i am unable too raid at all....

Latency at the moment is: 390ms(Home) 4091ms(World) in the middle of raid.

Last few weeks I've had 180ms(h) and 240ms(w) which is insanely awesome for my little old 384 line.

just remember 384 ain't raid stable anymore even blizzard sed so and few guys reported so.

This is new thing did they do instance servers, to make less laggy, but uses more bandwidth.

Hey ultraviolet, we haven't forgotten you, I made a few calls again yesterday to try and create some fresh urgency around your problem - I'll follow up again today.

Seriously... what's up with mweb and wow? I have a 512 mweb uncapped account. I just can't play wow. Huge (like 20sec) latencies and d/c'

My line stats are perfectly fine. I use 5-10GB per months. WoW runs perfectly fine from other isp's. Yet when I log into my mweb account it just won't work.... it won't.

I have pm'ed that ops guy and appart from tampering with some router setting (which all works perfectly fine with other isp's... so I don't see the point really) nothing has changed.

I also can not see how this has anything to do with telkom or my line. Like I said... other isp's work fine. With this mweb account it worked fine a couple months ago. But month after month you can see how the service degrades. From merely playing whenever I what to a point where I can barely log in.

Now I can understand the shaping and all.... but srsly... this is wow.... this is 7 years old. I used to play this on dial-up.... surely you can make good with adsl? I also understand the shaping with torrent's and that wow is effectively a torrent/p2p or what not, but again... at 10-20mb/hour it's not like I'm trying to crash South Africa's internet backbone by playing.

I have just upgraded to 4mbps... i have a feeling I might regret it.

/sigh

/edit forgive the harsh words.... but I'm sort off frustrated here as the only thing I can properly do with my R599 account is surf news24 as much as I like....
