MWEB Gaming Feedback

Im on the 384k service and my latency has been somewhat lacking since I've last posted here. Originally thought that addon spam was the problem and that I was reaching the threshold of my service, thus causing packets to drop, thus causing the WoW to give me the mood dropping "Disconnected from server" message... *sigh* With leatrix on I was getting beutifull latencies, cant remember exactly what, but it was beautiful. Even in raids it was only about 150ms higher. So all in all, I was happy. Not anymore. I get disconnected sometimes when all I am doing is farming for lockboxes in Grim Batol. So tonight, I disabled leatrix, logged in, and took some baseline latency readings for everyone on 384k uncapped service to compare with and provide feedback on. Also note that when boasting about low latencies, either add the two together (home + world) or just state them seperately. the world latency is your latency for spells and so on, there was a link earlier in this thread, so I will not delve too deep into it. Here are some latencies that I got tonight:

21h09 > 344ms Home / 333ms World - Un'Goro Crater
21h30 > 601ms Home / 374ms World - Vashj'ir
21h48 > 278ms Home / 441ms World - Tol Barad

I dc'ed a couple of times during that, for no reason. I could not get a spot in our raid group, so could not exactly get numbers on raid latency, but I can say with almost certainty that I would have disconnected. A friend of mine that lives about 4 blocks away was raiding, with leatrix, on a 384k service, and didnt even experiance as much as a sparrow's fart fluctuation in lag, where as mine usually jump all around the place. Also, he hasnt experianced any DC's at all for the past couple of weeks. Thought it might be a line fault, asked telkom to check yesterday and they could not find any problems. My PC is fine, nothing running in the background ( I checked, thoroughly..) Tried to convince Telkom to switch me over to a new DSLAM port on the exchange, but their response was " They cannot do that" *sigh*

Will, I pm'ed you my customer details, let me know if you can see anything wrong on your side :D

Hey,

I have installed StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty 20 minutes ago. Now it's being updated. The problem is that it's taking too long to finish. Sometimes the speed drops to 0 KB/s for a short time. Looks like it will take about 50 minutes (not normal - on a 384K line, it would usually get done in 15 minutes) to finish updating the game (the latest update - around 30mb) :( Is it being shaped?

No not being shaped, some of the game updates are delivered via a caching service called Akamai. Depending on which Akamai source it chooses to deliver the content it can slow down at times. We have been trying for quite some to get an Akamai node onto our network, or find some alternate solution to this, but there is a lot of red tape surrounding this.

Anyone else getting very high Home (24000+ms) and low World (350ms) pings? Every now and again I'll get this huge spike in home latency but world will stay normal, making combat fine but chat and AH very laggy.

Just want to find out if anyone else is experiencing this.

I am on the 384k profile and yes I was getting some nice 170 to 180ms last night :)

Slightly higher tonight (322ms oh noes) but will see in raid!

I always had the impression you were on a 4mb line Steve?

I'm busy taking a look now. There's no indication of a line fault , or anything else abnormal. Can you give me some cmd line traces and pings - I'd like to see what the basic connection looks like. Can you also give me some more indication of general symptoms - how often do you experience problems and how severe are they?

Hi Spartaniz I'd like you to try something for me please :

In Steam go to Settings account and change your beta particicpation to Beta Update

After allowing it to restart and install the beta client go to Settings Download and Cloud and under region specifically choose the MWEB server closest to you. Let me know if that improves your experience at all.

I wish :)

Raiding was fine last night (super speedy) but I did notice some strange behaviour. On Chimareon (25) there is a part where we have to stack the raid up and then a whole lot of AoE heals go off. I notice my instant casts go in to 3-5 seconds but then it is fine after that.

Obviously being on a 384k line there are limitations but it is nowhere near as bad as the older AoE fights i.e. Onyxia whelps where it was instant disconnect =(

I am not running very many addons (I like a clean UI) but I think I shall disable my damage meter (Skada) for tonights raid.

I'll post those details as soon as I get home. Going to try my connection with a tunneling service as well tonight. Is there any specific WoW tunneling service that you can recommend if I play on EU servers?

We have done quite a bit of testing with WTFast.

Hi,

It took a hour to update on my 4mbps line, but after changing to the mweb Johannesburg server, it works 100%!

Thank you!

aw yeah another steam update oh wait mweb somehow is dropping the traffic to their own damned content server so I can't login

Wasnt able to do any traces last night Will. Going to do it tonight. Also, would you rather recommend Battleping or WTFast? With Battleping I get 200ms home, 200ms world. Havent tested Wtfast yet, but is the latency more or less the same as compared to WTfast? Also, should when using WTFast, should i use the default settings, and only select a different server?

Lobsey can you try the same advice I gave to Spartaniz please, update to the beta client - it will allow you to select specific servers in the SA region

Honestly I don't think you'll see much difference in ping between the two, we tested with WTFast as some of the stakeholders here were already familiar with the service and liked it and they were very accommodating with us in terms of trial accounts.

@Will, I see you are recommending using steam client beta release to change locale.. Will this in any way affect play or steam use between non beta users and beta users. I know last year there was an issue on those lines with the previous beta.

Hi IRG

Not that I'm aware of no, but if anyone does encounter any problems please do let me know immediately and of course go back to the normal release client.

The main thing I was very keen to see was if people had a better experience with the ability to specifically choose the server closest to them. This very much seems to be the case, but if you're concerned about compatibility issues, or you're not having a problem then be safe and leave this alone until it's officially released in a few weeks time.
