MWEB Gaming Feedback

Yep Spartaniz, you really can't go wrong with leatrix settings. Alternatively if you'd like to know more about what the leatrix fixes are actually doing there is some extensive reading you can do on a site called speedguide.net along with a very nice application called TCP Optimizer which you can use to apply the various tweaks yourself.

Hi Will, thanks for pointing that out. Unfortunately I'm not in Cape Town so i'll check out the iGame servers .

As an MWEB customers there should be some other choices available to you very soon, keep an eye on that server list :D

Awesome! Can't wait :D

Hi tooone7, just thought I'd drop in quick and let you know my experience with BC2. I was playing on SA servers for ages and one night a few weeks ago when the iGame/Wage servers were empty I decided to just see what it was like playing on an EU server. I was amazed at the results. I use the Leatrix Latency Fix (http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info13581-LeatrixLatencyFix.html), but on my MWEB uncapped i was getting sub 200ms pings on almost every EU server. Totally 100% playable, in fact it felt far more responsive than any game I've had on the SA servers, plus at any point the are around 4000 servers to choose from. So ever since then me and all my friends have been hitting up the EU servers every night...

Lounger please don't misquote our policies.

We give priority to all traffic which is not classed as P2P, which covers browsing, mail, ftp, streamed video and gaming to mention the most obvious choices.

Traffic which is classed as P2P and therefore shaped, is all swarm based filesharing protocols (eq bittorrent), NNTP, one-click-hosting/dropbox sites, such as rapidshare and known providers of seedbox, torrentflux and other unshaping vpn type services.

I've tried your gaming and it was quite revealing. Very high, dynamic latencies across the board. In-game downloads also throttled, as well as updates for Steam taking forever to complete.
Even now Mweb gets slated in just about every game I play. Someone says "My ping is very high", gets a response "You on Mweb?". Answer is 99% "yes, Mweb is ****".
If you don't believe me I can provide the transcripts.

That sounds awesome Vaughan - I'll give it a try myself tonight :)

Never ONCE have I seen someone ingame complaining that mweb sucks (alot of Telkom complaints but that's another matter) However I recently had to go through an afrihost acc and my friends telkom acc, and on both I always had 300'ish ms. Back on my mweb and voila! 170ms in a 25man, I call that skills, a tribute to insane skill :P

A pity Lounger won't be able to enjoy the ultra-low pings our customers will get to all the new gaming content that's on the horizon :D

I've had the lowest ping ever since leaving Mweb. Best thing I ever did and I recommend it to everyone.

i played crysis 2 demo last night, im not if the ping readings is right.

was playing in wage, last night my ping was 9 and this morning 11 o.0

rest guys was 200+ o.0

just fyi hereticangel Crysis 2 servers are definitely on the cards :)

Since it seems to have gotten lost in the general ruckus - Will@MWEB - any chance of getting similar optimisations done for Rift?

@Seeyou

Woops I meant to get back to you on that yesterday sorry about that. First step is you need to drop me a PM with your MWEB username so that I can activate some reporting on your account. If you can then note down the exact start and end times the next time you play and send that along as well I can get our engineers to take a look at how the traffic is being classified. Also please make sure that the connection is as clean as possible for this purpose, so no torrents, open browser, or gtalk running in the background that might muddy the picture of what the game traffic is doing.

We have official representatives here whom, I agree, are very fanatical about our products. I can assure you that any other feedback you might see, comes from 100% genuine MWEB customers, we don't believe in faking it :)

Why does Mweb shape steam connections? The problem comes in when you try launch a game - it takes _ages_ because steam likes to connect to it's servers to do content hashing or version checking or something. This is terrible for anyone owning a steam account as now I have to sit here and look at "preparing to launch xxxxx" for 10 minutes while data to and from steam's servers trickle in at 2kB/s.

Seriously. Why shape steam at all? It's not a "download everything for free" service so people aren't going to swamp the networks like they do with news servers or HTTP downloads. I really don't see any point in the shaping and it's incredibly aggravating.

And before you ask, yes this also happens on with the Beta client set to Mweb's content servers.

7thday, this might sound cliche - but I dont have that issue.
Most cases it has been related to Steam itself being fragmented - have you tried defragmenting game files ?

There definitely shouldn't be any shaping going on in that space 7th day and I haven't really had any other reports describing those particular symptoms. If you'd like to assist with some testing please let me have your username in private and then provide me with some samples of the next few times you launch a game via steam (exact times please with no background traffic) so that we can take a look at what the traffic does.
