MWEB Gaming Feedback

Thing is, switching to another ISP account allows me to instantly launch games. I doubt it's got anything to do with files being fragmented.

Here is an example of my bandwidth graph while testing this scenario: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/88028/pics/random/steam.png

Look at the highlighted areas of traffic. The blue area is on my Mweb connection. It spikes to 153kB/s for a second and then continues to transfer data at between 2-10kB/s. The red area is after I switched to another ISP where it essentially flatlines the connection to do my bidding.

Same game, 2 minutes apart. FYI this was done at 5:30PM.

@ Lounger

As stated much earlier on in this thread I have run my fair share of bad things with ISPs. Being in retail myself I strive to offer customer service (in this country, I know what a shocker). Yes, I am now an MWEB fanatic due to the fact that my ping is the best it has ever been in the almost 5 years I have played WoW. I can PvP (melee) and not be out of range. My haste rating is higher than your blood pressure and I can fire off attacks smoothly in 25 man content. I have not had to use my "backup" ISP accounts for the whole of Feb and most of January. That reminds me, I need to cancel those. I follow this thread loosely now because there are no issues that I can pick up on.

Lets not forget that Will is a very active forum rep who actually tries to sort out any issues and drives the changes based on customer feedback. You may not come back to MWEB but at the moment you are pissing against the wind here, a small voice drowned out by the cacophony of cheers for an ISP that has done alot more for it's customers in the last year than any other ISP I have ever been with.

I am not a steam gamer so I cannot comment on any issues experienced there but it seems isolated.

Please send me the info requested and I'll see if I can find any reason on our side that could be causing this :)

Just wondering, are there any knows telkom issues around potchefstroom? my gaming has gone to hell over the past 2 weeks, and my internet speed aswell, its usually useless for 2 days after it rains, but its hasn't rained for some time now, and i cannot get under 120 ping no matter what i do :(

if its mweb's fault i will come kill you Will, well maby not you since your prolly the burly mofo with arms strong enough to rip titanium. but the rest how ever will die.

ugh 2 hours for a 40 mb file on 384k unshaped line :(

I'd prefer to keep my anonymity on the forums - and to be honest I don't see what you would glean from my username unless you guys do things to shape people on an individual basis. If you're looking for geographical information I can give you that.

Just as an update: Launching steam games on my mweb account started acting properly when I tried again at 6:30pm. I've always experienced this shaping issue and I'm sure it's to do with time-based shaping. Always works well at night time but impossible to get running during the day.

Providing the username and subsequently the times at which you play would allow me to examine the traffic flow on your connection when you're experiencing the problem. We don't shape individuals and we don't shape Steam traffic and I'm quite concerned to hear that someone is experiencing a problem in this regard, but unfortunately there is very little I can do without additional assistance from yourself to properly examine the data.

@7th Day, I was having the same problem with Steam till my friend told me to close any torrent app I may have running. Worked perfectly after closing, apparently steam HATES p2p connections running on the line.

Steam does have issues with p2p programs, oddly though is that at times they do work together, so it does seem to be something MWeb does at different times of the day with the shapping.

no problems with steam and a 4meg line, my friend with a 512 on the otherhand has started keeping it in offline mode to be able to be guaranteed to be able to play his games without having to hope and pray that MWEB falls in line.

I saw this about 2 days abo, Port Elizabeth connected to the MWEB JHB steam server. TRying to go into a game would say unavailable and restarting steam made it impossible to get back in.

Not running torrents at all. Ever. Seriously I wish people would stop using torrents. South African internet isn't designed for such network-intense applications just yet.

But I digress. The problem seems to only arise when Steam needs to do some checking against the content servers. Once a game has been launched once and completed it's checklist, the following attempt launches it without problems.

If you view my bandwidth graph you'll see that there's a burst of steam traffic that comes through for a second but the rest trickles in. Anyhow, I'm cancelling at the end of this month (relocating to a new premises without adsl) so there's no point trying to hammer on about this any further. I just find it odd that nobody else is experiencing this.

Yep Spartaniz, you really can't go wrong with leatrix settings. Alternatively if you'd like to know more about what the leatrix fixes are actually doing there is some extensive reading you can do on a site called speedguide.net along with a very nice application called TCP Optimizer which you can use to apply the various tweaks yourself.

i tried the fix for a few days now, my latency was in the 200's most of the time, before applying it and also without it. i noticed 1sec lags during casts though, with the fix.

Just a little fyi for Friday. Our Bad Company 2 servers are operational as of last night. :) We have 4 32 player servers up, 1 x Rush and 1 x Conquest in Cape Town and JHB so Bad Company players please join us for some games tonight. We will be setting up a base camp on the GameZone Forums for this so please keep your questions / discussions regarding server related issues in that space.

hope for crysis 2 soon, as igame server just don't work you wait in lobby for 20 min and nothing happens.

As I understand it that's still in beta? From what I've been told it's very much on the cards once it launches officially.

SWEET!!!

It's a completely different environment hambone, XBOX and PC players don't join the same servers and Xbox multi player is exclusive to the Xbox Live servers, no-one else can host servers for those games.
