MWEB Gaming Feedback

What ISP did you go too? Need one that i can play wow on and download a bit on a 384 uncapped.

OpenWeb is good, the gold uncapped one, they seem not to be on the new "IS policy"(if you can call it that....)

Well after the massive all-round connection issue on Friday things have been mostly good for me WoW-wise. Averaging 300-500ms most of the time with very few issues so far but I'll see how things continue to play out before I get out my "all-clear" hat.

Killed BQL and Sindy 25man yesterday :) At the start of the fight I had some lag but it eased out towards the end, and by the time we got to the sndy fights I had absolutely no lag :D Was awesome!

Look his still doing it.

I post good and the bad, not trolling either. I will be the first to complain and the first to compliment.
I feel that all feedback, postive and negative contribute to hopefully finding solutions due to location / dslam, times played, fixes applied and overall experience with the product.

In the meantime, hope Cataclysm levelling is decent for most if not all MWEB subscribers, we need it after 2 months!

So I was playing WoW last night, at about 21h00 when I noticed that the lag was absolutely terrible. Got 4k ms I think. Previously with the MTU fix it would start at 4kms but it would go down rapidly till about 500 - 900, gradually spiking up to 10k for a couple of seconds at a time. Now last night it did not go down, it just stayed that way. Then the DC's started, constantly. I would DC, try to log back in, and get DC'ed again. I thought the servers were a bit laggy, so I asked my guild on TS, they said that it is a bit, but they are not getting any DC's. Switched over to a Telkom connection to test if it is the servers or not, and got a 300-400ms latency :D Will check again tonight to see if problem persists in the same manner.

Now, Will@Mweb, what are your thoughts on the matter? You have been awfully quiet lately. Are there ANY feedback at all? Or can Mweb provide me with a temporary 5gig data package from another ISP just so I can play WoW? I mean, its the least that they can do after I have been patiently waiting for 2 months for a fix. I don't want to move away from Mweb, I just want a fix...

Will@Mweb? Are you hearing our geek'ish cries?

MWeb usually sort out problems like this pretty quickly, my suspicions are that they require changes to the shaping policy which cannot be implemented or there is simply not enough capacity on MWebs network to handle all their existing clients at this point in time... After all its only when shaping opens up when things start to die... Anyways point of the matter is that this has been going on for well over a month now and I have had to (reluctantly I might add) move ISPs... If MWeb cant come to the party, Ill take the party somewhere else! :P

Hi Beanbag,

Last night a link went out, I think they rerouted the connection when that happened. I also had some nasty lag, just all of the sudden out of nowhere. I think it went out twice since they got it fix at around 10-11 and then just before Cataclysm my ping went crazy again. Switched to a R19 Axxess lite account and got it running smoothly again. Well that's till I couldn't log into WoW due to the login server.

Hope Mweb's running smoothly again today.

@Beanbag, there are other ISP's in south africa. Get used to the fact that Mweb and gaming just don't go together.

For me I even get dc'd from BFBC2 these days when playing on my (last months worth of) mweb account. It's a shame really. I don't even bother logging on to wow with my mweb account. It drives me fking insane when I log in to lag. Its actually so bad that I cant even farm or quest. And I have not seen a shred of decent info/ good news from mweb on this thread. Until I see that info, I will refuse to log in to wow with mweb. It's a waste of time.

Hi Beanbag

Not quiet, just busy :)

Ok the situation as it stands is that some optimization was done on the IPC links and what I'm seeing with my testing now is pings of around 800-1200ms in Stormwind on a very busy realm dropping down to 500-600 in quieter areas. I'm certainly not calling that fixed by any stretch of the imagination, but it's certainly a positive change. we also saw some positive impact from the P2P connection limiting, but there were some complications with the final implementation of that. A new firmware pack for the traffic managers should be rolled out during the course of this week, which will put us back on track with this. Perhaps this in combination with the IPC optimizations will put us in a better space, but again I can't make any guarantees.

Please be assured that we will continue to work on this until we find a solution and that we are also looking at longer term strategies to provide a more robust gaming experience.

Kind Regards
will

so last night, i got cata at BT games in Tyger Valley, and they told me "here is your free cap" and i asked "who is the ISP" they said "Mweb" and I told them "Mweb is messed up for wow atm....do you know that...." they replied "yes" and they just laughed and then i left to use my cap for torrents :(

Hi OtakuD. We've already made extensive changes to the traffic managers to try and resolve this. I don't like referring to them as shapers as the shaping of P2P is only one aspect of what they are there for. I also don't believe that this is a question of bandwidth availability, this problem began at a stage when we had just added capacity to the network and generally speaking even though P2P gets given some breathing room in the evenings the overall utilization during the day is generally at higher levels. I agree that there is a relationship between the two elements, we proved this with recent testing when we held back on opening up P2P allocation. this is why we've been looking at the aspects of how P2P protocols behave to see if there is anything that needs to be done differently there.

Bear in mind that with arguably the largest single accumulation of uncapped subscribers and the most relaxed AUP that there is probably more P2P happening on our network than has ever happened in a single place in SA. It presents a whole new set of challenges that I don't believe any ISP in this country has really had to face before.

Hi Piet.

Definitely not the case. I checked with our product teams when Havox brought this up recently and there's no deal in place like this. I've just called BT Games myself and confirmed with the staff member I spoke with that, to the best of his knowledge, their deal is with Branded Internet. I also have the contact details of someone at their head office. I will be speaking to him as soon as I can make contact to ask that this is communicated to all of their branches.

Kind Regards
Will
