MWEB Gaming Feedback

We now have a direct SA server set up, in addition to SA to DE, SA to FR, SA to NL. Have you tried them out? Right now our SA servers are in Johannesburg, so your proximity to JHB will impact your results.

No Single-Player in Diablo 3

Blizzard's Diablo 3 (touted for release later this year or early next year) does not include a single-player mode -- it has to be played over their Battle.Net service. I tried Diablo 2 over Battle.Net briefly on my 384kbps uncapped shaped account and the performance was not great. So this means that unless I get a faster line, I'd pretty much be wasting my money buying D3? Does anyone have experience with Battle.Net specifically?

depends on location of the server i would think?

there would be no use playing on a USA server i would think, cant remember how d2 works o.0

In D2 you could connect to US West, US East, Europe or Asia servers. I think I got the best performance (such as it was) from Europe, but it wasn't snappy enough to play properly on.

weird i played it back on 56k dailup times, it actually worked o.0

yes there was lagg though it was playable :p

i doubt d2 max out a 384 line, its probably just bad ping

I don't think there is cause for concern. If games like HoN and LoL run fine then I don't for see a problem. Sure, maybe if the screen is chock full of monsters and magic on a 384k line you might get some lag but I am betting MWEB will most likely add this to their big list-o-games.

I need to read the discussions around this in some more detail, but the impression I got is that they were referring to the fact that the game won't launch without an Internet connection available, rather than saying that you could only play it online. This is really just about beefing up their anti-piracy mechanisms and taking the strategy they started with Starcraft 2 up a notch with the achievements and certain game modes not being available unless you were logged into Battlenet.

As I understand it, D3 will ONLY be online/Realm play. The Auction House and community aspects are what Blizzard is pushing, so you have to be online to use the game, but also, you can only PLAY in online games:

They are doing this to combat piracy, hacking, duping items, etc. especially now that they are offering RMT (real money trading). They keep saying that it is all about improving the game-play experience, etc. which I guess is true, but D2 "Single-player" and LAN play are both gone in D3.

Hmm I see what you're saying. In which case your question about connection speed may well be valid. A lot will depend on exactly how they're implementing this client/server architecture they're talking about and how content is instanced for online play. I'm imagining a lobby-based community and trading environment and the ability to zone into the game as either a solo player, or for a co-op, or competitive session rather than a fully persistent universe where everyone was running around together.

I can't see why they would want to take that route, although it begs the question of where Blizzard sees Diablo's future in their strategy? Are we looking at a simplified version of WoW using a micro billing business model as opposed to monthly subs?

D3 is not a MMORPG and won't become one that I know of. No idea on billing, but it is unlikely there will be additional charges after purchasing the game if the game has to be used online. This is part of their roll-out of the new Battle.Net 2.0 systems. Not having playing much D2 on Battle.Net and not being a WOW player, I can't really comment much on Battle.Net. No idea yet even if they intend to limit the geographical regions which can access the servers. They certainly are focused on Northern hemisphere: US, Europe and Asia pretty much. I don't think they even know that the planet has a Southern half :)

I did some more reading (I haven't been following the dev that closely) and you're right it won't be an MMO in it's first iteration, but you can certainly see the scope that Blizzard might have this in their long term thinking. As I understand it Cataclysm is potentially the last expansion that WoW will see and while it will certainly still live on for a number of years Blizzard do plan very long term and they must be considering the future of this side of their business.

Looking at the focus on group PvE that they're talking about for D3 and the hints i've seen that D3 could go console as well it does make you wonder if somewhere on their long term roadmap there is a cross platform MMO, with more instanced content (ala Guildwars), real money trading and microbilling components.

Cataclysm shouldn't be the last WoW Expac, if the "leaked" product slate is anything to go by.

Yes, I just killed a kitten. Anywhooo, WoW isn't dead yet!

For Diablo 3, as far as I can understand, you can play a solo campaign but you still need to be online to do so, just like SC2. How the AH will work, I guess thats if you play online with everyone running around.

@StevenC: What kind of performance can we expect with D3 online? I'm on a 384kbps uncapped shaped account. My (brief) experience on Battle.Net with D2 was not that great. Even the short lag between clicking the gold on the ground and actually picking it up makes the game less that great to play, nevermind actual monster fighting play.

Guess we will find out when beta hits :)

Your single player experience should not be affected at all (in terms of latency) by having to be online because all the content will be stored locally. Achievements (if they put those useless epeen measurements in place) would probably be the only interaction online.
Online play will of course suffer usual latency setbacks (yay Northern Hemisphere) but Blizzard have always tried to develop with the "mass market" in mind. If those goalposts have shifted (like they did with WoW) then 384k most likely won't be ideal. They have stated that grouping up will most likely be 4 players max in a group so dungeon crawling (if they allow separate instanced dungeoning) won't be a terrible experience.

Best thing to do really is follow Diablo 3 fansites while beta is in progress to get a feel for how the game is going to work. I never played D1 or D2 online so I am completely thumb sucking here.

There doesn't seem to be any clarity around how/if single-player will work. You'll have to connect to Battle.Net and remain connected while you play, so I don't know at the moment. I'm not going to pay R300/R400/whatever for the game until I know though :)

Shame on you - poor kitty! :D

EDIT: I have to say I'm starting to look forward to this game though, the last decent hack and slash action rpg I played was TitanQuest :)
