MWEB - Message from CEO - Acceptable Use Policy

Got a call a few minutes ago from M-Web. "Dear sir. You have been flagged as a power-user and we will sent an e-mail to you during the day in which we ask you to move over to a much more expensive product cause you download to much and we don't make enough money out of you"

Ok that is not what they said exactly but that is basically it. Wonder what is in the letter.....

Please post the email here. I'm sure everyone is curious to know what it says.

Why can't they have a power user package based on seacom instead of that addict account that must be using to sat3 due to it's pricing.

Sigh.

To Mweb, maybe a suggstion that you can try on the 4mb lines, why not do the same as axxess express + account, limit the time frames, eg. mon-fri 7am-7pm limit the speeds to 1mb then afterhours and all weekend its full line speed ? i think by doing that things will be much much better, and also people will still be able to stream youtube at 1mb (maybe with very little buffering).

I have a slower connection during the night time ..... :(

I will basically "ignore" their opinion that you are a "power-user"...sinse they've been ignoring our requests to find out exactly WHEN do you become a "power-user".

Some people consider 10Gb a month as A LOT! I don't think anything of downloading 10Gb a day!

I have a 4mb line so the line is capable of the following, considering it's running on max average 420kb/s:

420kb/s * 60 (seconds) * 60 (minutes) * 24 (hours) * 30.5 (average maximum days / month) / 1024 (mb) / 1024 (Gb)
= 1055.51Gb per month
= 263.87Gb per week (roughly)
= 34.60Gb per day

Now would it not be "fair" to ONLY be considered to be a power user when you go over half of the maximum bandwidth used as illustrated above, and below that is fair game?

i got the same call yesterday, was told i would get a emial and by 5pm still no email from them

and how much gigs did you use ?

oh and I wanted to add...just incase people are wondering "what" I download that's 10Gb a day!?

uhmm...here's some examples...

tv series (especially stuff that doesn't show here)
documentaries
HD music videos
game trailers
youtube
metacafe

these are only a couple of things I could quickly think of, and none of these fall in the "piracy" category. Of course I'm gonna use download managers to que up my downloads and leave the thing running. Why should I not use technology available to save me time at the end of the day. I don't want to sit and look at stuff to download every single night, and because it takes quite a while to download it just makes sense queing and prioritising my downloads, so I can view them later when it's finished.

Um - you have to use a download manager when your connection runs at a fraction of the line speed.... what should take an hour to download, now takes 8.

Hi Sajan, please refer to my previous posting. I do not feel that it is appropriate that we discuss the specifics of your usage in a public forum, however I think it is important to emphasize the point that you are in an extremely small minority in terms of the manner in which you have made use of the product, hence the call that was made to you ... See moreyesterday, requesting that you move to an Internet Addict account. The vast majority of our customers are not utilizing the product in a manner which prompts us to bring the terms and conditions into play.

Is Marko Joubert a MWEB employee? If not he must be their biggest fan - he lives on facebook responding all the time to just about anything on the Free the Web page.

I only downloaded about 350gb sofar this month. (HD series mostly)...

I don't mind (like everybody says) if i know that i only may use for example 10gb a day so that i know what my "cap" on "uncapped" is. If they want to force me to a more expensive option, i will ask them very nicely to put their product where the sun don't shine.

Telscum here i come with 35gb again :P

I think he's a loon, but anyway. Some people really get caught up in the hype surrounding the advertising.

I don't want to post my normal usage cause someone will break down my door and lock me up.... :)

If M-Web tries to force me to a R1999-00 internet addict option, i will gladly cancel and i hope the other "flagged" people do the same.

*sigh* Whats with all the secrecy

MWEB won't tell us what gets you marked as high-usage.

Users won't tell us what got them marked.
