MWEB - Message from CEO - Acceptable Use Policy

Well 1 thing I do know is that there is nothing wrong with the line, getting about 3.6mpbs down (can't remember up) when doing speedtest.

As far as I understand it, shaping is enforced on p2p traffic, so I would like to quote Mr Rudi Jansen again...

"We have no intention of shaping bandwidth more than is necessary in peak network conditions. It’s not dramatic shaping at all, and it’s only in peak hours."

I honestly don't mind shaping but when I look at my downloads at almost 2 in the morning and I see that my nzb's are coming down at average 60kb/s where the line capacity is roughly 420kb/s...I have a BIG problem with that...so it means that my p2p traffic is being throttled and I'm losing about 86% of my line speed...that seems a bit harsh...

So again...(and yeah I will log a call with MWEB) I would like Mr MWEB Operations to explain this to me.

Hi SlowHands,

Can you please PM me your details so that we can investigate

Kind Regards
Mweb Ops

Hi MWEB Operations,

Thank you for replying to my question. Can I pm you the details this afternoon when I get home? Sadly I don't have the account details with me at work.

Kind Regards

@Mods, can we have a satisfaction poll with Mwebs latest move added to the thread? Would be interesting I think.

Hi All

The issue is not so much around the amount of usage but rather what a customer is using their ADSL line for and how they are using the internet and if this is appropriate and in-line with our Terms & Conditions.

no man Mweb, thats bull, if i'm using my line at home for myself then and i'm maxing out the line 24/7 then surely i shouldnt be flagged ? cause i can prove then its only for me, but if a person applies for a home package and you can prove he is sellign to other people or using it for a business then yes flag him and tell him to move to a business package, dont come tell the clients who use the net for personal use that its not the amount of data but the manner as to how they using it.

Tell us then how must the service be used if you cant do that then also you AUP as zero use then and u cant tell people that they have accepted the AUP when signing up.

Dear Mweb Operations

I got a question ? how do u bypass the shaping ? if i decide to pay for a rapidshare account to get my data that i want then that is my own decision, if you then get full speed all the time, is that realy the clients fault ? cause the client is paying for a service at both ends.

Mweb doesnt state anywhere in their condition that their clients may not join additional services. So if the client does and mweb didnt stipulate it in the condition when signing , will the client realy be liable for this type of treatment from the ISP ?

If thats the way things are , then i think mweb should tell the clients who dont want to move to the R1999 packages, cancel the contract then refund them for the full amount of days that the service has been suspended.

Quickly will mweb i personly think see that their income from these users will impact their pocket, and then apoligise for this.

Mweb If you do not want to post your reply on here please pm me your reply.

This is another reason we need an in between account. We understand R549 isn't even for super downloading but R1999 is too expensive for unshaped. There's a huge missing gap.

Well if there is a gap, it's caused by Mweb downgrading their uncapped offer in order to sell more expensive ones.

Maybe you are right, but this is my first month on 4meg with mweb. Will see how it is after Seacom is back up.

Sorry, WHAT ?
That's a contradiction, first saying it is not about usage - and then stating "What they are using it for"
Almost like saying I am using the fastest possible (home) connection to grate and melt cheese - what else am I using it for ?
Does this mean that you classify browsing (ie YouTube >3 Gig a day) as not downloading ? - because that amounts to fairly large amounts of 'usage' - but is still classed as 'Browsing' (under your terms of 'how they are using the internet')

I am definitely enjoying your services - done 146Gig sofar this month - but that statement is illogical im sorry

He means using the account for business when its a home account and bypassing shaping. That's all.

Broadband ADSL: Uncapped

* Use as much data as you like
* FAST always-on Internet access
* Phone and surf the web at the same time
* Pay a fixed monthly price
* Ideal for video calling, downloads and running a small office

Yes, not cyber cafe or running a wisp off it.

is that what you guys want to give as an isp ?

I run a small home office (1user/me) , and can EASILY pull 200GB+ a month from up Africa client sites over the VPN - does the data I require now decide the size of my office/business.

On a side note, I don't pull the data myself, but rather collect it from the local client's premises as they have much faster connections.... but I could just as well do it from home and wait patiently once a month - but this doesn't mean I'm deliberately abusing the system.

The problem here is that there is no middle ground. There's the "WOOWOO TRUE UNCAPPED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SA AT A REASONABLE PRICE" uncapped account at R539/month, and the "Internet Addict" (which is basically just a Business account) at a whopping R1999/month.

How about creating something to cater FOR the downloaders, offpeak? An account like the Axxess Express+ - during the day it operates like the R539/month flavour, but after peak hours (let's say after 6pm) it is either unshaped/throttled, or you turn a blind eye to the unshaping methods you consider abuse. Price that somewhere in the middle - you get to keep the customers and you're not asking people who actually USE an uncapped account as an uncapped account to suddenly pay 370% more for the same service. And please don't tell me the accounts currently operate like that - as has been posted in this thread and dozens of others, shaping / throttling after hours, even in the early hours of the morning, is only slightly less debilitating than it is during the day.

If MWEB's focus is SO heavily centered around Customer Service, I don't see why you haven't come up with a compromise like this yet.

+1 million

+2 million, basically what I was talking about earlier on. Offer a package with throttling between the 512kbps and 4mbps packages and we would all be happy. Could help with Peter's VPN issue.

Are you sharing your connection, running a business from a non-business account, bypassing shaping?

It's not about HOW MUCH you download, it's about HOW you download it.

Let's make it easy for you. Green is quantity (usage) and blue is the manner in which it's used (using). No contradiction.

From MWEB's website for the account :: Ideal for video calling, downloads and running a small office

yeh, so MWEB in their infinite wisdom has disconnected my account due to "abuse". for 1 i do not in any way bypass their shaping policies. only download via rapidshare, hotfile...etc. so FU MWEB. Awaiting a refund...
