While working in London I connected via VPN to my office in the states. There was considerable traffic over that network however it was all perfectly legit. If I were to do this in SA, I'd have been cutoff from doing business with no explanation whatsoever. I would expect a bloody answer for that. In fact the circumstances are irrelevant - in any customer centric business, one would expect an answer to direct queries, even if the customer has been in the wrong. Who are MWEB to assume that the customer did so with intent to bypass their shaping? For all they know, the customer was unaware of the issues, especially considering that the Ts and Cs keep changing...

It was not meant to be heading anywhere. I was merely pointing out that all these individuals are with MWEB out of choice. If they are not satisfied with the product they are free to move on. If they have no desire to move on then clearly MWEB has a great product here.

You bring up an interesting issue - if, as the MWEB CEO claims, there is no shaping outside of peak hours, then why was mrudling using a VPN. Either there is shaping, or from MWEB's perspective, they had no right to assume that he was using it for illegitimate purposes - in which case a warning would be best practice - not GTFO and STFU - which appears to be their attitude...

Well that's partly what I was saying - if there was a wall of Shame and Fame then there wouldn't be this problem. We could all go and log on and see exactly what mrudling had done to deserve the big banhammer. With any luck, Mweb would have been reasonable about the whole thing and avoided what could turn out to be a PR mess. If you use methods to bypass shaping then sure, you should be warned and then cut off. I give people (any people) one warning and then I punish them. It's stupid to go out of your way to piss off customers.

It was explained earlier in this thread that being connected to a VPN all day is not an issue at all. It is the fact that people were using it to bypass shaping that has caused the problems.... perhaps our "anger" should be directed at the cheats who are ruining it for everyone? We all know people were using these services to do exactly what MWEB is accusing them of!

Would you honestly have been pumping full line speed for up to 10 hours at a time when doing business over VPN?

If so then perhaps it would not be unreasonable for MWEB to recommend you rather upgrade to the Business package as the "home" one would clearly no longer be suitable for you?
 
So the culling has started...

Lure them in and then get rid of the ones you don't want. Same thing happened with SAOL.

HE USED VPN TO BYPASS SHAPING PROTOCOLS TO DOWNLOAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone come forward and complained about being banned based purely on their usage alone? If so then please point it out to me as I missed it.

OK so here's a scenario in which I would be cut off sumarily.

I have a business partner in the states. We have a VPN going so that we can keep our privacy (a good thing). Since we run a photography business, we are constantly sending RAW files between the sites. This amounts to quite a lot of traffic over the VPN. Everything else we do is perfectly in keeping with the AUP. We're not running it as a business, it's a small office. Oh wait! I've been cut off and now I have no way of securely transmitting my files. Whoops.

Yes, it's quite likely that mrudling did use the VPN to bypass shaping - sure. Is there complete proof of it? Did Mweb ask for an alternative explanation or did the consultant even once entertain the idea that he might not be God of the Internet? Nope. It was just STFU and GTFO. Hooray! Wonderful PR work there.

For more than ten hours, most certainly. I would connect to the servers in the states and have constant, multiple streams of financial data being pumped to my terminal. And no, why should I now be pushed out of utilising my uncapped account because of that? Small home offices are perfectly acceptable in their Ts and Cs. I'm not intentionally trying to circumvent their shaping - I'm just doing my damn job...

SOLE DISCRETION. Their terms allow for it. The same way a restaurant claims right of admission reserved. If they don't like you they are well within their rights to kick you out.

Again, perhaps our anger should be directed at the cheats?

usually the shows are downloading while i'm at work ( not even at full line speed ) then when i get home i do youtube and the radio


Used to be with axess express + and did way more than this and they never had any issues.

ok got home and luckily its still on, still waiting for the disconnection, maybe they havent cutt me off because on moday after they called me, i decided to use mweb like i did axxess only staring the donwload @7pm till 7am, ut still think i'm better off with another ISP, even if we have to pay R200 more its still fine, its freedom to download from where and who u want that counts.

apparently openweb is this shiz, but mark my words. too monkeys in their tree will have them do the same. maybe not now, but eventually they will if every one do 24.7.

ok Mweb OPS , please explain why will you emial him still if you terminate his service, 9/10 he is at work and might not be able to acess mweb mail or yahoo from wor k ( i know i cant ) so try and make that concete effort to call even if you try every 5 minutes

Wel Mweb should state in their T&C that the use of A VPN is not alowed making use of anyother paypoint service being used on their service is also not alowed, but they dont, and when u use a VPn their is nothing stating that this will bypass shaping and stuff like that, if u use a VPN its for yourself protecting yr DATA

True @ Necuno, but maybe by then more Big GUYS would have dropped their lines in SA and making data even cheaper and also thier systems might be better and more stable than Seacom, then this will not happen, and people who got shaped uncaped will then not have to worry about the amount of data. But now that is Mebs problem, they relied so much on seacom and now seacom isnt the SHIZZ anymore and we suffer. but lets wait and see what happens.
 
The english in this thread is becoming the shiz niz.

@Lancelot, I'm a bit concerned about King_Kraig as he is the only one who claims to have been discoed and not to use a vpn or similar bypass service. Being the sole exception does raise question though about the honesty of his claim ( sorry KK nothing personal just commenting ).
 
First Afrihost the hero fell, now MWEB - I find this most amusing.

Obviously MWEB still have a few remaining die hard fans - their time will come too.

I recon this is a much better case for ASA.

Uncapped, except its not.
