i don't understand. so you only want to pay R500 for either 35gigs or 1TB? 300gigs is a big no-no? am i missing something here?
 
It actually sounds like Jack is just being greedy to be honest.
 
Nope. I am not greedy. I am a consumer who pays R539.00 for an UNCAPPED package which means that i may download 1gb or 1tb. My choice my money.
 
All that i want to know is what a fair usage for my R539.00 is. Is it 10gb, 100gb whatever.

If Mweb are shaping so heavily in order to limit data downloaded, why do they need to ring people or coax them into buying a more expensive product? Anyone who gets a large volume down every mont needs a medal for effort IMHO.

i do about 12gigs each night when i have nzbs queued up. if i did this every night, then i'd get 12x30=360gigs each month without even trying, and only downloading during the night, all within the T&Cs. is that not large enough for you?
 
but then again...surely MWEB has NO right to tell you which software you may or may not install on your own PC? Which brings us back to usage, because if usage wasn't the issue, they wouldn't have worried about you using methods to get around the shaping protocols to get your hundreds of gigs in a month. Usage is what it's all about at the end of the day. If usage wasn't a problem, there would be only 1 type of uncapped account. They obviously have to "flag" the heavy users, but the question is...WHEN are you downloading too much...and I'm not even asking for an exact number...just an estimate...like roughly 10Gb, or roughly 200Gb...
 
No ISP in the world have I seen give an exact number. They use the shaping to control the load on the network. Of you're bypassing the shaping they can't control the load and THAT is the issue. By bypassing the shaping it really does effect everyone as it's not just you doing it.

Just abide by the shaping and all will be well.
 
I think if you are bypassing shaping MWEB are just going to implement stricter shaping rules - which obviously effect those who arn't bypassing it.
 
well then I'm in the clear in terms of the T&C's becuase I'm using Grabit for my nzb's...but would still like to know why at 2am in the morning I was only getting 60kb/s on a 4mb line!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? BTW speedtest shows my line can do about 3.6mbps down so there's nothing wrong with my line.
 
Folks are still fixated on usage. It's not the usage or amount that is the issue here.

Last night I also had issues with torrents. Think it's more to do with the seacom issues than anything else. Usually they let torrents fly after seven though so wonder why they still shape so heavily at night.
 
You see the problem here is that hey shape us so much that we have to find alternative ways to download.

They just phoned me, i told them to F O! The first month I killed it, second and third month I have taken it very easy and only download after hours. If they dont want that type of user on their network, tough.

Glad i still have my 33gig WA account.
 
So, it starts...

Interesting that this is all going down while Seacom is still...well, down. Checked my usage just now & it's probably quite high for a 512 connection, though I would actually dispute the amount since I assume that it includes data from downloads which timed-out on my side and should not rightly be considered as downloaded data. 80% of my data is pure torrents (no seedbox or similar) & captured youtube & other streams after that, with some nzb's when I can be bothered. Torrent uploads are choked quite heavily during most of the day & often well into the night. Dunno if they consider the line speed when they're deciding on who's a "power user"; as far as I'm concerned I'm making what I want out of the connection. If other people are happy to pay the same amount for checking their email & browsing then perhaps they are on the wrong package (& being ripped off).

And THAT is why they need a power user account. Doesn't need to be completely unshaped R2000 package. Just slightly LESS shaping for slightly more money.
 
Little off topic here, but being in the IT industry i know of at least 20 odd cleints cancel with mweb today. 6 of those got the call

I assume that MWeb is only too happy for these "heavy" downloaders (who are, presumably, in contravention of the T&C anyway if MWeb has contacted them) to cancel their accounts. They loose 20 users and "save" 10TB per month :)
 
but like I mentioned already...they can't really get a call because they didn't comply with the T&C's...the same bloody T&C's applies to the Internet Addict's package which encourages people to do heavy downloading. So what's the difference?
