but like I mentioned already...they can't really get a call because they didn't comply with the T&C's...the same bloody T&C's applies to the Internet Addict's package which encourages people to do heavy downloading. So what's the difference?

Using it to bypass shaping is abuse. There is a difference between vpn use and vpn use for mass downloading.

Please allow me to take the opportunity to address some of the concerns raised in various threads and hopefully dispel some of the myths growing around those who have ‘received the call’.

Firstly let me restate something that was posted on Free the Web this morning in response to a customer who was called yesterday:

“I do not feel that it is appropriate that we discuss the specifics of anyone’s usage in a public forum, however I think it is important to emphasize that anyone we have addressed this with, is in an extremely small minority in terms of the manner in which they are making use of the product. The vast majority of our customers are not utilizing the product in a manner which prompts us to bring the terms and conditions into play.”

Regarding vpn usage, connecting to a vpn service, or making use other types of encrypted traffic is not in contravention of the acceptable usage policy, we respect your right to privacy and to use these types of services as freely as possible, within the boundaries of the usage policy.

We are however well aware of the fact that there are numerous tunnelling services, utilizing vpn’s (or darknets as they are sometimes called) and commercial news and seedbox providers which utilize SSL traffic for the express purpose of allowing their users to unshape their traffic. The use of these services for sustained unshaped data transfer is not allowed on our shaped products and it will be addressed when discovered. This holds true for other unshaping techniques which may not be covered in the above definition, such as for example SSH tunnelling.

Let me state once more for the record that the customers who have been affected by this are in a very small minority and that we are looking very carefully at all aspects of usage over a lengthy duration before making any decision to enforce the AUP.

So large amounts of data being hauled through VPN or SSH tunnels are, obviously, not acceptable. I regularly have an SSH connection open between two machines for most of the day. I guess the total data transferred over this would be tiny when compared to using a tunnel to download through.

You can keep that SSH connection open for a year if you like and if you use it to transfer some data back and forth that's really not a concern either. However when you start pushing gigabytes of data through the tunnel at maximum line speed for extended periods of time and its clearly visible that you're using it as a primary mechanism for bulk data transfer on a regular basis then you are risking 'the call'

Makes perfect sense! If someone is using these services to get passed shaping then good riddance I say! well done MWeb on keeping the service usable for the rest of us. It is the few greedy fsukers who always try and spoil it for the majority and you, and the rest of us, are better off without them.

What's your objection? My understanding is that the affected user is first given the choice to upgrade his account, such that it is in agreement with the kind of usage he is engaging in.
