MWEB - Message from CEO - Acceptable Use Policy

dude, i am on 67gb on a 4meg line for the month and still only average 42kbs if i am lucky anytime of the day or night.

However a lot of peeps do exactly that zorko if you look at the "How many gigs downloaded thread" and quite a few folks I've spoken to have said the same.

Love all the "on their high horse" guys who say its not ok to go against MWEBs T&C - but it is OK to download all sorts of pirated things - and don't try justify that by saying all your downloads are legal.

but of course it is, apparently all linux isos have been updated to be around the 600gig mark ;)

So MWEB is therefore preventing people from protecting their PRIVACY.

If you cannot see the difference between protecting your privacy and regularly downloading hundreds of GB over encrypted tunnels, then there is nothing more I can say to you.

he needs a doctor... o wait he is one

So you're saying - switch off privacy when you are downloading files of x size?

Again can you see the absurdity of this?

Your privacy is limited by MWEB's issues.

Forgive the shouting, but you appear to be deliberately obstinate on this point:

If you REGULARLY download HUNDREDS OF GIGABYTES over ENCRYPTED tunnels this is considered misuse.

Please, before you post, REREAD this post. HUNDREDS OF GIGABYTES does NOT EQUAL normal usage of encrypted tunnels on the CONNECT/HOME/SOHO account. FFS dude, I don't know why you can't get this and I don't know what usage you require from the account over encrypted tunnels that you are so belligerent about.

The system is quite capable of shaping this type of traffic, we choose not to shape it precisely because so many people like yourself who use vpn legitimately would be adversly affected by this. All of the commerically available vpn services I've seen which encourage bulk downloading specifically mention unshaping in their advertising, which brings us back to intentional usage.
Perhaps you could give me some examples of other types of vpn services that the average man in the street would consider using that would generate high enough volumes of traffic to register as potential abuse, so that I can understand your concerns better?

Thanks for your response. :)

I think the question is:

If a person who downloads x GB while NOT on a VPN is NOT considered ABUSING the service,
will a person who downloads the same x GB while ON a VPN be considered ABUSING the service?
Note that the x in this question is an amount one could comfortably download either way without
24/7 downloading.

I don't speak of maximal usage here. I speak of say
A. You do 60GB/mo normally (your normal activity) without privacy.
B. You do 60GB/mo with privacy (normal activity).

B is therefore considered abusive?

i.e. Not VPN use to increase total throughput but VPN use for privacy keeping the total usage the same (i.e. person on VPN may end up downloading for a shorter period of time).

Hence my question of usage limits.

I think all VPNs have "acceptable usage policies" too and they are almost all against mass downloads
of copyrighted material to cover themselves. There are a variety of VPN services around, some are quite cheap while others are pretty expensive. The more expensive ones have servers in a variety of countries.

Otherwise the person who wants to use a VPN for anonymity must curb total download or not download at all - because who knows how much is considered abusive?

I am not a paranoid privacy nut but there are plenty of times when having a connection in a distant country is helpful, especially if you buy content in that country and would be blocked otherwise for geographical reasons.

Another question is - does MWEB subscribe to NET Neutrality. Say I want to purchase content from overseas TV broadcasters in a foreign language - I've seen that you don't shape this content yet, will you embark on shaping that too keeping in mind that DSTV downloads are not shaped?

1. It's not your business what I require. I may even be speaking hypothetically. It's irrelevant. Suffice to say these services exist and they don't exist to provide unshaping - that's not their primary purpose. I know there are some which exist for that purpose - even on MyBB but the rest of the world does not have this problem.
2. This 100s of GBs - I am curious about and want clarification on that. Is it 100s of GBs or is it say 30GB VPN traffic mixed with 170GB ordinary traffic. Is that abuse or not?

All I want is some form of quantification. However, I don't think that will come because since their system is dynamic, MWEB may consider abuse 500MB traffic out of 200GB if that 500MB happens while 'it may degrade quality of overall customer experience'. I guess if you only do 10GB pm on a VPN service and nothing off, even that could be considered abuse if that 10GB happens to be during office hours or during early evenings. SO basically the user has to watch himself but has no clear indication what is what. Is it a % of total traffic? If your VPN/Tunneled traffic is 10% is that OK or do you have to make sure it's 1% or less.

Dude. You're starting to sound like those guys that use linux distros to defend p2p.

Sigh

You're just trying to find the only legitimate thing you can and blow it up. If privacy is important to you, go down to the 512k unshaped product. There. Everyone is happy.

Dude -- the IGNORE function, do you know it?

yes itsa for those who can't do it manually and need some tricycle wheely assistance :D

way to early for such anger. coffee or tea might help ;)

The problem here is that there is no middle ground. There's the "WOOWOO TRUE UNCAPPED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SA AT A REASONABLE PRICE" uncapped account at R539/month, and the "Internet Addict" (which is basically just a Business account) at a whopping R1999/month.

How about creating something to cater FOR the downloaders, offpeak? An account like the Axxess Express+ - during the day it operates like the R539/month flavour, but after peak hours (let's say after 6pm) it is either unshaped/throttled, or you turn a blind eye to the unshaping methods you consider abuse. Price that somewhere in the middle - you get to keep the customers and you're not asking people who actually USE an uncapped account as an uncapped account to suddenly pay 370% more for the same service. And please don't tell me the accounts currently operate like that - as has been posted in this thread and dozens of others, shaping / throttling after hours, even in the early hours of the morning, is only slightly less debilitating than it is during the day.

If MWEB's focus is SO heavily centered around Customer Service, I don't see why you haven't come up with a compromise like this yet.

+1 million

Just a thought.......but if Mweb is bitching and moaning about abusers and heavy downloaders, how come they didnt cater for this when they launched this product? By this I mean having a proper infrastructure in place because surely they knew if the prices drop, their clientele would skyrocket, meaning huge amounts of bandwith.

Also, I feel it is a bit contradictory to their marketing campaign if users are being constantly policed and feeling fear ( on an uncapped account of all things ).....yet they call it "Free the web" and advertised as "unlimited data all the time"?

Surely they could have predicted this because Mweb has been around for a good couple of years, they must have had existing users doing heavy downloads already.

Regardless, Im still going to sign with them though. I think Mweb should just "chillax". Sure new clients download alot at the beginning, but they will see the amount of data they download will be less and less over a period of time.
