EDIT: This maintenance has been postponed ... http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...uncement-***&p=3819565&viewfull=1#post3819565

Hi All,

We have been informed by Seacom that they will undertake emergency repairs to their undersea cable commencing at about 9:00am on Sunday morning, the 18th of April. Depending on local weather conditions the repairs could take approximately 6-9 hours to complete and during this time we will have limited access to international bandwidth on this link. We do have redundant capacity on our SAT3 cable and we are in the process of securing additional international bandwidth to compliment this.

We hope to be be able to keep the disruption to a minimum and to this end, traffic protocols such as e-mail and browsing will enjoy priority over more bandwidth intensive protocols such as peer-to-peer and ftp. Please note that national / local traffic will not be affected by this outage.

We are monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis and as and when we receive updates we will notify you via our Free The Web site and via our online outages noticeboard at http://www.mweb.co.za/helpcentre/NetworkStatusNotices/tabid/1765/Default.aspx

Thank you for patience in this regard.

MWB.

Thanks for the 'heads-up'.

It will be very interesting to see how the network performs without SEACOM, and if the redundant capacity can cope with the recent traffic demand.

Should have added a note requesting heavy downloaders to take a break during those hours.

Additional Network Update Information

Hi All,

We were aware of the slow download performance situation between Thurs & Fri.

It was neccessary for us to constrain the non-priority BW pool more severly (as we will need to tomorrow) in order to allow for some backend plumbing changes on our network. There changes were required to allow for future capacity upgrades, the first of which went through on late Fri, with another expected nearer the end of the month.

Barring Sunday's maintanace on international access, your download performance should now have returned to more reasonable levels.

Performance first thing this mornig (Sat 17th) was quite impressive IMO (certainly better than Thurs & Fri).

I'm just wondering why it isn't possible to notify users of bandwith priority limitations (ongoing not temporary) while they are happening, rather than after the event?

I said this on another post, but wanted to post it here as well, simply because I just want it mentioned;

Has anyone noticed, there has been ALOT of issues with regards to the Seacom cable...

Yes indeed. The IS Basic uncapped accounts use seacom as well. And if Mweb is down. IS Basic uncapped accounts for R499 is down too.

SEACOM is working > 99% of the time AFAIK, but there's a lot of other infrastructure at both ends to consider.

Computer and communcication systems always take time to settle down, and sometimes years before they become stable 24/7, when they become 'invisible' to the user.

If you're affected by the 1%, you will notice it, and it may bother you!

Wow, I just got an e-mail from MWeb quoting the Network Maintenance Announcement about SEACOM.

This is the first I have heard from them since the new network went into place, more than a month ago. I don't know if that's good or bad, given all the recent disruptions...

Hi Gordon_R,

We try our best, but timing is not always under our complete control as we are reliant on the delivery by 3rd party infrastructure providers. Lets just say Fri's upgrade was not scheduled for Fri.

Can we blame Neotel? I like blaming Neotel.
Hi Gatecrasher,

Afraid not this time. In fact its not even strictly Seacom, but rather the SEMEWE4 cable that carries Seacom traffic between Egypt & France.

Thanks for the update (and the e-mail from Mweb).

Maybe its Dark Fibre Africa? Nobody ever talks about DFA, but they actually carry (?)50% of local bandwidth...

My point exactly!

Well let me tell you one thing

Screamer never answered phones, never posted on the forums when something like this was going to happen
Digichilli - the same
Afrihost - Also no response to slow speeds

So to Mweb, respect... that's pretty much all the clients ask for, answers to their issues / speeds etc...

Well Done and keep it up.
