Ok... Does this affect the news server connection? Cos mine is running pretty slow since i got back. I used to get a consistent speed, now it jumping full speed, then medium speed, then it sits on zero for a while.

dont think so nope, sorry i forgot the thread was discussing the newsserver :) when you asked what they've been up to -. i meant in general.. *shrug* about whats up with the NS right now. i'm actually not even with mweb, but from what i've read it seems screwy pretty much always

Finally, Dames I have been having issues since last week thursday. Is your line rental with telkom? Cause two friends of mine migrated their lines to mweb and they have no issues connecting to the mweb newserver.
I have sent the mweb guy a traceroute and my adsl dns settings and according to him they can connect to the newserver and their is no problems. But he still can't answer why I can't connect to the newserver.
Nasa it has been running like that for a while and it has been driving me crazy.
Guess we have to wait for the mweb guy to hopefully see this thread and come up with a answer

Ya its whack. Its like 'shaped' behaviour 24/7. Before I used to get unshapped after 6pm in the week and on weekends. Now it seems its permanently shaped.

My line is through Telkom... perhaps its time to migrate.

Yep - same here - really is very, very spotty - not happy

@Will@Mweb - any idea why those of us who pay for ADSL via Telkom with MWeb accounts are getting such bad speeds to the news server?

good luck with that. They won't reply to something about their shaping i have noticed. It's permanent shaping for the 4mb people. :D

Line is through MWEB with the bundled package, not through Telkom. Still have VERY erratic connection to the news server. I hope MWEB can at least clarify with us what the problem is!

Please tell me this is not true - or at least , if it is shaped that it's reasonably shaped - even 50k shape would be ok - but currently it seems to be shaped to 0k.....

I got an abuse notification recently for running nntp over a different protocol (even though I ran it at half line speed and only for a few hours a day). Fine. I said I would mend my wicked ways. But FFS, there is no decent alternative. MWeb's newserver is okay when it works, which is very seldom. Running an international new service over port 119 is a joke. 4.5KB/s on a weekend? And half the connections fail...

Already having to use a different ISP for WoW due to crazy latency.

Time to move on.

I've noticed very strange behavior with the mweb newserver. It doesn't work on the weekdays, but on weekends, my astraweb account works at close to full speed, though I am on a prepaid astraweb account so prefer to use mweb servers. The mweb servers connect but won't transfer, as soon as I connect my astraweb server in altbinz, the mweb servers start running at around 100kb/s for a few minutes then stop again, I disconnect all servers, restart all servers and the mweb accounts run quick again for a few minutes, I have repeated this a number of times, I have no idea why this is happening. it is quite frustrating that they have killed their newsserver.

I PM'd the mweb guy about the news server issues. He asked me to do a traceroute to the news server, to send him my dns settings from the router, and also to send him something showing that I am not able to connect to the news server.
He says that he tested the news server and according to them they connected fine and it is working.
I have forwarded him all those things on the 03rd November 2010, still waiting for him to reply which is frustrating.

Still having news server issues. But now, since yesterday morning, everything has been painfully slow. My browsing is going at about half the pace it usually does. Youtube videos are taking forever to stream, when before they flew. The whole internet experience seems to have just halved overnight! It is absolutely killing me!

dont sepose dropping the "dsl" from your username and using the saix NS works anymore now with the peering cut?

Is anyone getting full speed downloads on MWEB news server? Im on 384 uncapped, till the end of september I was getting line speed downloads on news server, and now its ultra-epic-slow.

Anyone know what has changed since that would cause this?

Mine was fine the whole of October, but I've had 3 days so far in Nov (incl earlier today) where I was barely able to download 100MB on my 384kbps connection.
Currently I'm getting 40kB/s again.

Hey guys, News server n00b here. How do you connect to them? People keep talking about it saying its better for p2p etc. but i have no clue where/how to connect to them. Any quick tips perhaps?

really appreciate it

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/103290-News-server-related-queries, should cover ALL the questions you have. by the way, UseNet has nothing to do with p2p; we just say it's generally better for downloading the same stuff than torrents.

edit:/
if you get stucj rather ask there -it will save you from hijacking other threads
