Hi guys, I am always buying astraweb prepaid bundles which are great value. The question is I am moving over to a mweb uncapped adsl account very soon and want to now how the mweb news server compares to astraweb? Will I still need to purchase astraweb prepaid data (I currently have 950GB left on my account) so that wont happen soon.

I am also trying to duplicate the setup for a friend and if the mweb news server is fine then I wont get him to buy the astraweb data.

mweb news server is about 30kbs for uncached content, full speed for cached content, just use mweb server +free xsusenet account

I found that alot of content wouldnt download on mweb server from my side..Im using free xsusnet account..working well

I have had the 1 meg uncapped on trial for a week and even with content a few days old, never really got above 30 to 35 kbs from MWeb; for me to get full speed downloads I use both Astraweb and Mweb then things worked well.

I had the very same question the OP had and have accepted that I am just going to have to buy Astraweb prepaid from time to time, and am also going to get a free xsusenet account (think it only 25 gigs a month, but will still save a bit)

I'm using Mweb news server on 1Mbps uncapped + Astraweb prepaid account limited to 128kbps, just for the few stuff that isn't cached properly.
I often get full speed on Mweb's news server, but then again I'm only downloading SD quality content.

I grab a variety of new or recent content and it all flies on the Mweb news server. The xsusenet server is decent for older stuff, but it has a 400-day retention which means that old things might be a problem. Since the prepaid accounts don't expire you can just set it as a backup server (if you use SABNZBD) and you will be all set.

I have Mweb and Astraweb set up in my Usenet Client with Mweb being set as the "preferred" or "download here first" news server. At the end of the day, large amounts are still being pulled from Astraweb. So you'll most likely not be able to cut off Astraweb entirely. You will however be able to split some of the bandwidth towards Mweb, making your Astraweb bundle last longer.

I've found Mweb doesn't have a very long retention rate, like 200 days or something (which is less than a year). So if you suddenly want that first season of say Game of Thrones (only a year old) , you might not even find it on Mweb, but will on Astraweb.

I would wager that it is far less than 200 days...

Why not get the 3 months unlimited option from astraweb? $20 for 3 months(which is like R53 per month), and you get 1353 days retention? and a max download speed of 10Mbit/s

Also did that mweb trail. Full speed outside of daily business times.

How many connections did you have? Were you only downloading from their news sever? I was stuck at about 35kbs general; once I added astraweb, then it went much better

Depends if it's cached. I use 3 connections on the Mweb news server. I can use one and it will still max out my line.

Had 2 connections. Heard it increased to three recently. Only news servers. Like I said between 8 and 6 its hit and miss but outside of that full speed. Have never used astraweb. Although I'm looking out for a leka special. Cancelled with telkom yesterday. Will get back on when all the predicted 'upgrades' happen. If telkoms 1mb uncapped was better priced I would go with that. They are an awesome isp speedwise.

Astraweb has a 1000 gig special. I bought one and should keep me going for a good time.

Thanks to you and Froot for your feedback

Exactly the same experience here. 105 kbs from Astraweb.
Another reason to go the Astraweb way is that you will not find some of the older stuff on the MWeb server.
