Hi guys...
I'm considering swapping back to MWEB, just wanted to know what you guys pull off the MWEB news servers?
I'm looking at the 1MB line.

Questions
1.do they also throttle their own news servers?
2.better to get paid news server?
3.what is the average gigs you can do a month?

I currently have the red africa special but often i find that my 30GB is spent and i have to toggle between accounts...
it sucks to monitor it all month long...

thanks all!

I get full 1 meg all day on cached items. Uncached goods I get between 20-40kbps, however I usually go with torrents for anything not cached as I get better speeds. My total usage is 100-120 gigs a month.

i get full 450kbs+ on cached content, uncached about 30-50kbs, full speed even at day time.

though unchached content does not pick up speed.

Likewise! Full speed ahead. Currently have the 1meg uncapped option. Only had the line for a week and downloaded 40Gig already :)

Only downloaded series thus far.

Without even trying (downloading only at night 12am to 7am) my usage stats in a month come up to about 80gb or so. Don't normally have any problems with speed unless MWEB is doing the "knyp".

Hi All, Hi Drukkie

I am also inquiring about moving from Axxess to mweb, i called them both yesterday, from what i have discovered is the difference between the two is Axxess throttles there whole account when you are in the 20% of the top downloaders. Where as Mweb shapes different ports, so you can get full download for youtube lets say, but torrents will download slower (in some circumstances)

Sadly my axxess uncapped is dam slow, and i find it pathetic, only downloaded 13 gigs this month, no torrents only YouTube and some applications.

3: I believe there is no limit to Mweb. Just limited by your line speed.

Does any one know which ports mweb blocks?

Thank you
Regards

Hi Theknowing...
I was with mweb since they launched uncapped but moved to webafrica when i got a red africa account.
I used to do 300GB a month on Mweb...but now I've calmed down... :)
So looking to downgrade to 1MB and save another R200 or so...

Just wanted to know what the mweb news servers were like...WA's news servers are great...except for stuff here and there...
As far as i know mweb does not block any ports....just shapes them :)

PS yip the throttling from axxess and afrihost sucks balls....a friend of mine has moved over to mweb...

Mweb doesn't any outgoing block ports, but they do block a few incoming administrative ports for the user's protection, which you can disable in the ADSL control panel on Mweb's website.
I'm not sure how good the speed on the Mweb accounts would be in PE. AFAIK the speed on Mweb accounts are good in Cape Town, but not so much in Jhb area, so I'd suppose that PE will be in the same boat as Jhb?!

Most of the stuff that I download via HTTP are running full speed at 104kB/s on my 1Mbps Mweb uncapped, but during the day certain download sites are fairly slow at like 20kB/s.

I'm currently using a combination of Astraweb and Mweb news servers to download stuff. I got the 180GB Astraweb account for like $25, and it doesn't expire at the end of the month, which is awesome. The Astraweb account comes in very handy on content that aren't cached on the Mweb news servers.
I think I'm averaging about 50-80GB/month on Mweb 1Mbps uncapped, which is fair considering that I don't try to download the whole Internetz :)

Thanks Pada...
How is the shaping on astraweb? can you download 24/7?
Do they shape port 80 also now on astraweb?

I've pretty much tried all the ports and Mweb is shaping them all, so I'm not getting full speed off Astraweb during the day. The past two months I've had the R1 for 50GB Afrihost deal, and that went full speed 24/7 on Astraweb.
