MWEB - Seacom planned maintenance update

Still get 1 Mb/sec speeds on certain international sites. I'm not downloading though, just checking now and again.

International is completely dead for me ATM on Axxess 384K uncapped. Requests gets to IS' servers and then go nowhere... so much for contingency plans eh?

its the end of the world as we know it, well not rely. Just heard that the eskom can't afford to power the internet this winter and started to black out portions of the world's internet one at a time, who new! ;D

As a result of rough seas the maintenance on the Seacom undersea cable was not completed yesterday as planned. MWEB will continue to have alternative international fiber bandwidth in place for the duration of the maintenance. Thanks for your patience.

Regards
MWEB Ops

So by alternate routes you mean 56k Dialup modems right.. because thats the speeds we are getting now

err no we not, why the hell are we routing through america?

Traffic to some sites is going that route (mostly US West Coast AFAIK).

Its the only route thats not congested, and MWeb and Tata have transit rights on it...

Edit: This is the way the internet should work. We shouldn't be dependent on one (or a few) cables.

Edit#2: Tata communications is a very large ISP, with many transit rights worldwide:

Eidt#3: The WikiPedia article on SEA-ME-WE 4 indicates that during a major break in early 2008, 75% of traffic was routed across SE-Asia and the Pacific. The current fault on 15 Apr 2010 is not as severe, but MWeb has taken pre-emptive action on this segment. Other threads on this forum indicate that SAT3 is heavily congested (and may be undergoing maintenance as well).

Hi semaphore,

The portion of the Seacom path that is under repair, the SEMEWE4 cable is a major artery between south Asia and Europe. The impact of this reduction of capacity reaches way beyond just SA as affected carriers around the world re-route traffic via alternate paths.

MWB.

Is that sustainable:whistle:

Thank you for the updates MWEB. (especially on a Sunday)

Thanks for the update. I'm still waiting for the Network Notices page ;-)

It seems odd that only some site traffic is being re-routed. I guess it takes time to change the Is that sustainable:whistle:[/QUOTE]

Hope that the break doesn't last too long (into Monday), but realistically SA is just a blip on the bandwidth map.

Edit: Just noticed that local sites (like MyBB) that have banner adverts are slow to load because of latency to google servers.

Have seacom given an ETA for repairs on the cable? its well over 9hours now obviously weather conditions are part factor.

Do we have an ETA on things going back to normal?
Hi bradrap,

Best estimates we have is 6-9 hours for the duration of the repairs, however their start was delayed from yesterday morning to this afternoon due to unfavourable weather conditions.

As soon as we have any further feedback we will update.

MWB.

iBurst is going full 125KB/sec international. They must be using a different system.
