Mweb Throttling - Its true.

Because Mweb's network is busier? Do any of you realise that you are not paying for a guaranteed 4mb throughput at all times? There's a 1:20 contention ratio on ADSL, which means the most you're ever guaranteed is 1/20th of 4mb! Due to unshaped accounts and people downloading 24x7, there's a lot more usage on the network and speeds will obviously fluctuate as a result of that.

If Mweb were to guarantee everyone their full line speed ALL the time, then theyd have to charge you 10 times more than what you're paying right now....

So true:cry:

I know you are trying really hard to get that post count up but surely you have more to offer than what you have been in terms of your posts. Quality over quantity FTW.

lol, if it ain't trolling or dodging the banhamer then its poor quality posts ... I am 20 000 posts behind give a forumite a break :)

+1

I cannot back you up enough on this... I am expieriancing the exact same thing...

While torrents are going at a satisfactory speed (about 175kb/s down, don't need more than that for torrents), its actually been my browsing and ftp that has been very slow the last 2 days.
Somehow I think the speed issues does not have to do with throttling, but I have no idea what else it could be.

Its not 1:20 connection ration on the mweb accounts it is more 1:50 or higher because the business accounts are like 1:20

Whatever the contention ratios are (and I have separate issues with those) - the fact that some users are experiencing speed reductions and some are not tells us that it's most likely not throttling or per-user shaping.

Why? Because it'd be an incredible amount of work for Mweb to do that.

As far as lowered speeds on places like Rapidshare goes, Mweb have always said that they will shape sites that become troublesome. I'm sure you can imagine that if they don't want you to download 24/7 at 100% line speed from torrents they probably don't want you to do exactly the same thing with rapidshare/hotfile etc.

Some Tracerts from the people having issues to say any of:

bbc.co.uk
google.com
microsoft.com

would be quite interesting I'm sure.

I also note that OpenWeb is having international connectivity problems - perhaps our connection through various pipes is particularly dodgy. Would it shock you if SA had sub-standard connections? :D

Changed login on router to AXXESS...guess what speedtest.net shows:

1. 3.46mb/s
2. 3.46mb/s
3. 3.46mb/s

Wow luxe, I wouldn't mind getting that from Axxess. I sometimes get less than 384kbps on a 4 Mbps account.

i too believe that 4mb accounts are being throttled to 2mb, i have even tested with a vpn account and speeds on http will not exceed 200k both with and without vpn, this is normal http downloads
using a normal shaped saix account i immediately get to the full 400k download on the same files

i have only used 80gb for the month and as far as i am aware there is not supposed to be any throttling ito mweb fup

I have a 4mbit line, which syncs only at 3 due to the distance from the exchange i have done 260GB this month, and my torrents last night where flying at 320KB/s. So they arent being throttled.

To be factual, YOU arent being throttled.

I will report back once I have had my "meeting" with the account specialist in the OP...its later this afternoon.

Chatted to the specialist..you'll enjoy this:

" Its 3:40 now, and i leave at 4pm, oh and i am on leave tomorrow, so i will get someone else to call you...ok?"

Http downloads now just over 100kb/s
NZB's a horrendous 24kb/s
Torrents 23kb/s

Although speedtest is giving me back my 3.67mb/s linespeed. Seems the shaping has just gone through the roof....R19gb at Axxess here i come.

Er.
Its impossible for an ISP to affect the speed that your ADSL line synch's at.
Thats determined by the DSLAM.

Whats probably happening, is that every time you change your account details in your router, you're rebooting your router. And its resyncing with the exchange a different rates.
This is a problem with your line quality to the exchange, not the MWeb PPPoE account.

Post us your ADSL Signal stats, attenuation, etc, and lets see...

MWeb cannot provide 4M ADSL solution

Mweb ADSL is CRAP!!!, so let me save you some time, dont use it.
You will buy a 4 Meg account but get just over 38K download speed. and when you call then they are very quick to blame your telkom line.

In my case i did a complete local and international download test, with telkom. I have prove that MWeb cannot provide a 4 Meg adsl solution.
I have cancelled my account, been with MWeb for 6 Hours now.

Utterlry DISGUSTED. I hate their damm sales talk " Oh Yes sir,you will get 4 Meg download speed, we dont use I.S anymore, are now use Seacom and Sat3" Ohh helll, help us.... BULL!!!
