MWEB throttling

Mweb can suck it. They have a $#!7 storm their way as soon as i am with a new isp.

Found a nice little work around if you need some decent internet so send me a pm!

MWEB is just another cash eating cow, nothing more nothing less, as are MOST of the ISP's in SA.
Yes there are exceptions, but they are few and far between.

I understand mweb's reason for throttling but this is ridiculous. I can't believe that I've used any more than usual in the past 30 days but I have been getting throttled for the past 6 days to unusable speeds.

notice that these are two days apart. I might as well have no internet.

But you're still able to browse websites albeit slowly, send and receive emails, and have a basic connection. What were you expecting, a quality connection after breaching the FUP?

Be grateful you're not with other ISPs who throttle at lower thresholds.

You're more than likely on a Standard account expecting usage of a Premium account.

You must have downloaded a helluva lot for your usage not to dip down so that you're unthrottled after a day or two, because that's how it usually works.

Or perhaps you're unaware of the 30 rolling window. Log in to your user portal and manage your usage correctly.

Fire up a free capped account from another ISP. Upgrade your account to one with higher thresholds, (which are publicly known), or move to another ISP. Simple.

You only have yourselves to blame here I'm afraid, and you'll need to pay more to use more.

But we've never been throttled in the past. For 5 days of the past 30 days our internet was cut off due to Telkom working on the lines and my sister and I, who use the vast majority of the internet, are writing our matric exams so we've barely been on the internet in the past month. That's why I can't believe that we've used any more than usual.

I would upgrade to premium but I don't manage the account, my parents do. And although I have offered to pay the difference, they have not done anything about it yet. They also claim they've forgotten the mweb password so I can't access the account. They don't really care very much about it because we're moving to the UK in 2 months.

Also we pay for 8Mb/s standard (although, I've never seen the download speed go above 2.5Mb/s).

Good Day, we can assist with the password reminder.

Perhaps provide me your preferred email address and I will send you the OTP form.

You should then be able to register your Cell number for the one time pin process.

Let's check this web page. According to: http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/c0L...b/showthread.php/779891-MWEB-throttling/page3 this page is 736kB. His connection is 5kB/s (or 1kB/s depending on which speedtest) so it would take him 148 seconds to load this page, which will most probably cause the page to time out. A dial-up modem is slightly faster at ~6kB/s (54Kbps).

@tcs36 have you tried a capped account from another ISP, are you sure it is not your line? If you haven't used the internet in days, it might not be shaping.

Why not call MWEB and ask them to SMS the password to the account holder.

Once you have it, you can log in to the portal and check your account's status.

8Mbps account, not heard of that. But usage would be between 6Mbps Standard (150GB per 30 day rolling window) and 10Mbps (250GB).

Furthermore, the fact that you've never seen above 2.5Mbps suggests that you have a line/equipment fault. This is shown further by your 321ms local ping in your one Speedtest (unless being throttled severely affects one's ping).

Could not agree more, high volume users/downloaders who value quantity over quality are better off elsewhere.

One aspect of "quality" is those times you often connect to your MWEB account to test latency. The results are always consistently good.

I do not agree on the quality side of things anymore. My ADSL line is crap as hell on Mwebs network. And even their own tests conducted, could not explain the issues I got. Miraculously when they were testing my connection, I was able to use it perfectly, without any problems what so ever. However, a couple of days later, back to the same old thing as before.

Right now I am just waiting for fibre to be installed. Then it is goodbye MWEB. Will try other ISP's who can provide more reliable networks when it comes to console gaming, who also caters for the increasing size in games. A single game is easily a 60 - 80gb download on the PS4 these days. No way I am sticking with MWEB

I found the password. We've used 197Gb in the past 30 days.

There are some abnormalities though; for 2 weeks last month we were away and the rooter was unplugged but +-3Gb were still getting used everyday despite no one being at home. We had no internet for a couple of days 2 weeks ago due to line maintenance but internet was still being used in that time (on one day 4Gbs). Why is data still being transferred even though no one could possibly be connected to the internet?

Our ping is normally between 9 and 18 and recently the ping has been much higher so the slowness could have been partly a line issue but the ping is back to normal now and the internet is being throttled to a more usable (although still annoying) 0.4Mb/s.

MWEB's network is perfect. Anything else is a line/equipment/router fault.

The same applies with other quality ISPs like VOX and Crystal Web.

Indeed, if you need high usage, you'll need to look elsewhere.

Good luck.

My problem is more that on my premium uncapped 4mb/s line, I was unable to play any online game. I raised this. Got phone calls, etc. They finally put a monitor on my line, with graphs etc. During the time they monitored my connection, everything worked (according to mweb, nothing changed on their side, and nothing changed on my side either)

The test kept running, with my net working. Once they stopped monitoring, a couple of days later, boom. I am back to old.

As for my usage, I don't consider myself an abuser. I am a gamer and a streamer. I spend a lot of time online gaming or streaming video content. Downloading digital copies of games instead of buying physical copies. The world is changing, and MWEB is not changing with it

You don't have a 4Mbps Premium Uncapped line. You have a 4Mbps Premium Uncapped account, running on a 4Mbps line, owned by Telkom, and the quality of which is controlled by Telkom. At least up until the point it reaches your property. Between your walls and modem is up to you.

There is nothing wrong with your 4Mbps Premium Uncapped account. The MWEB network is flawless.

Your line working while MWEB were monitoring the line, and then stopping working a few days later, is merely coincidence.

Ok, I worded it wrong, yes, a 4mb/s premium uncapped account.

As for the account problems. I honestly don't believe it is the line. Mweb has done numerous tests on it. And cannot find anything wrong with noise or anything on my line.

ping, download, upload
My normal speedtests use to be 19ms, 3.43mb/s, 0.47mb/s
And these speed tests where stable as can be.

What I am getting now is 19ms - 120ms, 1.89mb/s - 3.4mb/s, 0.18mb/s - 0.42mb/s
And believe me, they jump all over the place. There is no stability on my connection, except for the time they were monitoring it.

Also, on the exact same line and equipment, FNB runs smoother, and gives me the results I use to have, together with the stability.

To me this just points to one conclusion. The MWEB network quality has dropped. Or they want to get rid of me as a customer.

Hi DERoestorf, DM me your MWEB details and I will arrange for a tech specialists to investigate and contact you

Tbh, you have had your chance. Also, I have sent my details on DM before. You have done so many investigations that I am tired of even thinking about it. Fibre will be installed in my area within the next month or 2. Once installed, I will cancel my account. Until then, I am keeping you active just for the sake of having internet.
