Mweb throttling

Just for comparison:

On an Afrihost capped account - I pay R299 for the office and get 150GB + another 150GB free.
So 300GB for R299.
Mweb R239 = 118GB soft cap. Afrihost R237 for home and R397 for home premium (both 4MB).

Doesn't really make any sense (to me) to be on these cheapie uncapped accounts when you can get more on a capped account.

All ISPs in this price range are crap. Always shaping or throttling. Afrihost has home accounts with even worse thresholds:
https://www.afrihost.com/site/page/acceptable_use_policy.

Yet people like to demonize MWEB.

Like I said, you get what you pay for.

Edited: Thanks PP. VOX also bad.

But hey let's blame MWEB because it's fun.
What about webafrica? I heard that they do not count your usage between midnight and 6 am? That's when I do all my downloads?

Pay more and you will get a better service.

Not always possible for some people, especially if they do not have control of the account.

And this applies to ALL ISPs. All ISPs have cheap crappy accounts, and ALL ISPs have awesome business accounts.

You can't buy the cheap crappy account and then decide the ISP is crap. That's exactly what you're doing.

So would you buy Openweb's "awesome business account"? Because what you pay is the only factor here right?
MWEB shills are all the same here, repeating the same rhetoric in every MWEB throttling thread (lots of those, ne?).
All ISPs have FUP and conditions, no debate here. There are plenty of ISPs out there that handle their "cheap and nasty" accounts better than MWEB.
Just remember, MWEB had a massive marketing campaign that promised no limits, pure uncapped goodness etc. Then they pulled a bait and switch on their customers who were paying a premium for the service. Their shaping protocols (when I was with them) impacted on real time services like online gaming and it was for me a very mediocre experience.

MWEB's throttling is draconian. The 30 day rolling window is a kick in the teeth, making you jump through hoops because you broke "the law", which is not readily available for people to see. I know I wouldn't want to try explain it to an elderly person who wonders why they can't Google things or go on Facebook because little grandson Johnny was watching too much Youtube over the holidays.

And yes, I expect the broken record(s) in this thread to come along and state their age old argument that the unfortunate customers must buy the account for their "needs". Technically you are right. I just argue that the right account is not at MWEB :D

/looks at thread title

/sees MWeb

Expectation? Ummm.... it's going to be about MWeb?

He is suggesting the OP move to another ISPs because of MWEB's for low FUPs, when other ISPs have worse FUPs.

People have been singling out MWEB for a long time now. Surprised you're only seeing this now.

I know you said this as a joke, but I know people that use Openweb's platinum account and they are happy.

But let me not stop your crusade.

I don't bash ISPs, even OW! I bash some of their mistakes...

And I follow all the ISP threads.

I find it hilarious the mindset of how the determinator of whether an ISP is good or not is the amount of GBs that can be pulled, as if all GBs/bandwidth is equal.

OP, ask yourself if you've ever been unhappy before the throttling came about. The answer is likely a resounding no, which is why it makes the most sense to rather pay R40 more and upgrade your account, instead of having to cancel and move to new unknown waters.

Recently I have had loads of problems with them, loads of outages, line speed isn't what it use to be. And it is not just a R40 upgrade, it an additional R100 or more to upgrade.

Those would be Telkom issues, not MWEB. So you should speak to Telkom and get them to check your line out.

It's not R100, it's R40. You are only upgrading the account, not the line speed. The line speed does not need to be upgraded in order to use a 'faster account'.

What upgrade is it then? To premium or what?

Please explain this in more detail so that he gets a very clear picture.

MWeb fanboys are hilarious, most of you are probably sitting on the highest package and don't experience what we do on the cheaper package. There is so much salt around MWeb and it's there for a reason.

My apologies, you're on 4Mbps Standard, so the upgrade to 6Mbps Standard for an extra 40GB would be an extra R120 per month.

The best value upgrade I referred to would be from 2Mbps Standard (70GB) to 4Mbps Standard (110GB) for an extra R40.

The other option would be saving R40 per month and going for 100GB + 100GB night time, capped data? http://www.mweb.co.za/internet-connection/adsl/capped-adsl/200gb-capped-adsl-deals.aspx

There is no difference between Standard and Premium data, only the thresholds. I was on 6Mbps Standard for ages because my usage was less than 150GB per 30 days.

The reason there is salt around MWEB is because it does not bode well with people who consider being able to download large amounts of data the determinator of what good internet is. If the package you're on does not allow for your needs, it's fairly obvious - upgrade or leave.

It's quite clear that MWEB's thresholds are more than generous when compared with other ISPs.

The issue is that MWEB took your downloading joy away, not the other ISPs (who offer less), and that is why there's 'salt'.

Really?

I posted a price comparison with Afrihost. No comment on that.

What other criterion would you consider outside the big 3:
Price
Data cap
Consistent reliable line speed?

That's exactly what we're saying. Don't blame mweb for you being a cheapskate.

International pings for one.
